HitchHiker's Game Director talks weaving stories into games

Shacknews recently caught up with the Game Director on HitchHiker to talk about the upcoming game and how developers weave stories into their experiences.

Developed by Mad About Pandas, HitchHiker takes players on a mysterious journey as they solve puzzles, witness a story, and just enjoy the ride. We recently had a chance to sit down and talk with Patrick, the game director on HitchHiker to discuss the stories that players will experience, and how they came to create a title like this.

According to Patrick, players will embark on five different rides in HitchHiker through five different environments. Each environment will allow them to experience new feelings, stories, and puzzles. Each ride is also dedicated to a single emotion that players will experience as they unlock more about the game’s backstory so that they can learn what happened and interpret the facts that are laid about before them.

He also talks about the challenges that come with creating an interactive experience like HitchHiker, where players are tied to a seat in a car for most of the experience. One example he used is an instance in a desert environment, where players must manipulate the radio dial in the car to change the weather as a storm barrels down upon the vehicle. It’s an interesting idea and one that we’ll be intrigued to check out when HitchHiker releases down the road.

Hitchhiker is a mystery game set along lost highways, where your goal is to solve the puzzle of your own backstory. As a hitchhiker with no memory or destination, you catch a series of rides across a strange and beautiful landscape, tracking the mysterious disappearance of a person close to you. Your drivers range from stoic farmers to off-duty waitresses, and each one has a story to tell. Clues appear, alliances emerge, and nothing is quite what it seems.

As your journey continues, you must decode the events of your past while confronting the dangers that lie ahead. Hitchhiker is a road-trip odyssey about exploring the unknown in order to find yourself.

Hitchhike across a strange and beautiful landscape in five rides with five total strangers who will challenge your grasp on reality... And maybe your philosophy on life.

Solve environmental puzzles, and keep an eye out for clues, in order to uncover your mysterious past.

The choices you make when speaking with the drivers will reveal your own dark secrets.
