Zen Studios is hard at work preparing the ambitious sequel to the original CastleStorm.

The original CastleStorm was a cult hit when it arrived on the previous generation of consoles and devices thanks to its easy-to-pick-up design and art style. For the all-new follow-up, developers Zen Studios are aiming to amp up the experience in every way possible. CastleStorm 2 offers a graphical overhaul and bring a bigger focus on strategy. Additionally, it expands the universe by adding new characters and enemies.

While we were on the ground at Gamescom 2019, we got a chance to get a demo of CastleStorm 2 as the developers explained some of the process behind creating the game and what fans can expect from the tilt-shifted sequel.

The team is placing a heavy emphasis on storytelling with CastleStorm II, which should add some intrigue to the original formula. The series returns to a classical fantasy land of medieval madness, loaded with heroic knights, enchanting sorceresses, ghastly griffins and more. If this wasn’t enough to lure you in, the team is also adding a threat from the grave by way of killer zombies, headless horsemen, and necromancy. Protecting a castle is no easy task these days.

Each of six distinct campaign modes is represented by heroic characters, as you strive to conquer an overworld map through a mix of turn-based strategy and skill in an upgraded take on traditional CastleStorm combat. You’ll build castles and fortresses through gameplay structured to engage the hardcore strategy fan. The complexity of the experience even grows to the creation of entire empires, but CastleStorm 2 is also designed to be accessible to newcomers to the series. As the castles get bigger, they fall much, much harder thanks to the physics destruction powered by the Unreal 4 engine.
