Elon Musk confirms Spotify Premium is coming to Tesla in U.S.

Musk was tweeting his billionaire butt off when he let some juicy Spotify news leak. Maybe he can get to work on making the media player better than Winamp?

Tesla owners have a pretty wonky user experience when it comes to listening to music in the cars. The Bluetooth connectivity with Android and iOS devices is serviceable, but much of the navigation occurs on the smartphone as opposed to the giant touchscreen in Tesla electric vehicles. It would make sense to have some more native applications running on the screen to go alongside Slacker Radio, and it appears Spotify Premium is finally going to make the leap to Teslas in the United States and Canada.

It seems likely that Spotify Premium, YouTube, and Netflix will all be heading to Tesla cars with the v10 software update. Tesla CEO Elon Musk replied to a Twitter user that Spotify Premium support is "coming." We all know that "coming" in Musk Standard Time could mean anything, but the hope is that North American Tesla owners see something soon. Teslas in Europe, Hong Kong, and even stinking Australia have had the ability to use Spotify Premium in their electric vehicles since the later part of 2015. Slacker Radio has been the only native app option in the states since the Model S launch, and that is pretty lame. Spotify is a much larger service with over 232 million monthly active users of which 108 million were paying subscribers at the end of June 2019.

We still have no actual timeline for when Tesla V10 software will be pushed out to the electric vehicle fleet, but we have some more applications to look forward to with the addition of Spotify Premium. It seems like Elon has some other plans for this weekend, as he just tweeted some pretty forward-thinking plans for Mars.

This guy tweets too much, but I would definitely buy a Nuke Mars t-shirt. Keep it locked on Shacknews for everything from the front lines of the electric vehicle revolution, and check out our new 9to5 Elon podcast.
