iPad OS to support USB-C thumb drives and camera file import
Arriving around a decade late to the party, Apple finally adds external storage support with the new iPad OS.
After years of resisting consumer calls for external storage support for their iOS devices, Apple finally made the call the add support for USB drives with the release of the all-new iPad OS. Making use of the USB Type-C port on iPad Pro, users can now put their USB thumb drive to work with an iPad, increasing the tablet’s work capabilities.

Never officially. There was a “Camera Kit” 30-pin connector that supported USB and SD cards and people worked with/around it to support external storage but true, honest-to-Jobs support has been elusive until now.
