Larian Studios teases Baldur's Gate 3 with new logo

Fans of classic role-playing games have something to look forward to, as Larian Studios is teasing Baldur's Gate 3 on their website.

Okay, let’s be honest here. You might be a little confused by that title. After all, the original Baldur’s Gate released well over twenty years ago. The tease comes via the official Larian Studios website, where the company is teasing fans of their games with a logo that clearly outlines a Roman numeral three.

By default, many believed that Larian might be working on Divinity: Original Sin 3. The previous two entries in the series had done very well for the company, and it makes sense to explore the world more with another sequel. Thanks to some sleuthing by avid fans on the internet, though, we’ve now learned that all signs on the website are actually pointing to Baldur’s Gate 3.

As you can see, the metadata for the video playing on the Larian website includes trademark information for Baldur's Gate and Wizards of the Coast.

We first saw the reports that it could be Baldur’s Gate 3 in a tweet from Twitter user @13xforever. We decided to check in on things ourselves, and sure enough the Twitter user was correct. By looking at the source code of the website, we were able to download a video that is set up in the page’s source info. We were then able to throw this video in a text editor (we used Notepad++) and go through the relevant metadata ourselves.

Sure enough we found the video’s metadata absolutely littered with clues. From the name of the logo, “BaldursGate_logo_III_retouched.png” to the fact that the metadata includes several instances of trademark for Dungeons and Dragons, Baldur’s Gate itself, and even Wizards of the Coast. Rumors about a new Baldur’s Gate being in development at Larian were shut down by the studio last year, when WCCFtech attempted to learn more about the rumors at the time. Now, though, it appears that the rumors were actually right, and we’ll finally get a chance to return to the Baldur’s Gate universe after so many years.

I’m personally beyond excited to learn more about this project, so I’ll be keeping an eye on things as best I can. I’ll be sure to provide any updates as we learn more about Baldur's Gate 3 from Larian Studios in the coming weks.

Now wouldn’t be that interesting. Stripped from BioWare and given to Larian. Larians pedigree is impeccable as their isometric games have all been amazing and their engine is the beat in the biz for that type of game (IMO). Still would be kinda sad to see the franchise taken from BioWare though...

I think Bioware would be one of the least attractive houses to have the license at this point, unfortunately.

I'm really looking forward to seeing what Larian does with the property. Can't believe they're the same lil company that snuck Divine Divinity out there while I was playing through Baldur's Gate II for the first time, and now they're helming the series

Yeah, it's kind of sad... but also at this point... I don't trust BioWare to not fuck it up beyond repair. It's the first time we'll see a new game from the series in sooooo long, I'd rather leave it in someone who has proven they are capable than someone whose track record has been atrocious as of late. :/

Eh, BioWare 2019 isn't the developer that made Baldur's Gate, you know? I mean, they might technically be, but how many of those same people are still there?

Perfect! I'm about 20% through Baldur's Gate 2 right now (who am I kidding it's probably more like 5% after ~30 hours) . I should be done right around the time this comes out.

I need to get back into it. I finished Planescape recently and it jumped right to my short list of absolute favourites. BG2 is like 200+ hours though, right? :(

Have you not played BG2??? If you haven't, and you enjoyed Torment, then you have to play it asap. I'm on my second time through (played it immediately on release of course) and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. I played BG1 like 8 times so I'm not sure why it took so long for me to get back into BG2.

I think it's the sheer vastness of it that intimidates me, I've bounced off it a couple of times then lost the save each time! I might just jump in with a walk through, I'm not ashamed to do that these days with some old adventure and RPG games.

Really it's only as vast as you make it. If you want to just experience the main quest line and a few extras here and there then you can roll through the game in a reasonable time. I just like to explore every little nook and cranny. I'm a little anxious because I've been trying to figure out how to do all of the various NPC's side quests while maximizing time with the main party I want to take through the rest of the game, haha.
