Tetris and Sanrio partner on online game launching in June

Tetris and Sanrio are teaming up together to create an online game featuring Sanrio's beloved characters.

Set to debut on June 3, the new collaboration between Tetris and Sanrio will bring many of the Sanrio characters to life in an online game within the Tetris universe. There aren’t any real details on what the game will be, or how it will play, but this is just the first step in the two companies’ working together to create new games and merchandise.

Posted in an official press release on the Tetris website, the two companies discussed the current plans that are in place to support a multi-year partnership to collaborate on merchandise and new video games.

Giovanna Sanzò, Licensing Director at Sanrio GmbH had the following to say about the deal: “The 45th and 35th anniversaries of Hello Kitty and Tetris respectively are the perfect opportunity to launch this exciting partnership. Both brands’ devoted fanbases have built up over decades, and we’re confident they’ll love these brand-new offerings.”

“We’re thrilled to announce the coming together of two iconic brands, Tetris and Sanrio, both celebrating huge anniversaries this year, in a collaborative partnership,” Maya Rogers, President and CEO of Blue Planet Software, agent for the Tetris Brand, started. “Not only have the Sanrio characters been one of my favorites since childhood, it also has such an incredible history among girls and women. The pairing of these two brands to create games, novelties and fashion items is an incredible opportunity that we think will have great appeal with fans worldwide.”

It'll be interesting to see how Sanrio and Tetris combine their brands, especially given the recent success of titles like Tetris 99 and Tetris Effect. As stated in the original press packet, the debut for the two companies’ new title will hit on June 3, 2019, just a few months from now.
