New Rage 2 gameplay builds to battle with flamethrowing mech
Avalanche and id Software's Rage 2 is showcased in new gameplay footage that culminates in a sizzling boss battle with a mech.
As we approach the May release of Bethesda’s post-apocalyptic shooter Rage 2, the publisher has released nearly ten minutes of new gameplay footage, featuring a new ability and a battle with a man in a flamethrowing mech suit.
The original Rage released to average reviews and commercial reception during the last console generation and most people were surprised to see the series get a revival when the sequel was unveiled during E3 2018. For the second go around, Bethesda has enlisted the help of Avalanche Studios, the team behind Just Cause 2 and Mad Max. It was later revealed that Rage 2 would be built on Avalanche’s Apex Engine rather than the latest iteration of id Tech. As Rage 2 would offer a huge open world and lots of driving, the Apex Engine was chosen after the jaw dropping results it produced with Mad Max.
While development on the game was partially outsourced to Avalanche, Bethesda arranged for the team at id Software to provide assistance during development to ensure tight gunplay and that the game truly felt connected to the franchise. Earlier this year we spoke with Tim Willits of id Software. During the interview, he explained how the team wanted to expand on the world created with the first Rage and expand on the characters and environment.
Unlike the first game, the protagonist will have a voice and personality. The team thinks that having the player character fully interact with the rest of the denizens of Rage 2 will help build the story and world, making for a more immersive experience than we got with the original game.
