MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries release date announced
Piranha Games celebrated Mech_Con with the release date for the long-awaited single-player return to MechWarrior and showed off new gameplay.
Reactors online! Giant mech fans celebrated the MechWarrior series at Mech_Con 2018 and MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries was the guest of honor. Piranha Games unveiled the action game's release date and showed off extended looks at gameplay from the current build. MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries launches September 10, 2019, on PC.
The MechWarrior world has been kept alive in MechWarrior Online since launching in September 2013, but MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries is the first single-player entry in over 15 years. The new trailer showed off combat on massive battlefields, the high attention to detail when it comes to mech damage, and host of different types of mechs that players will be able to pilot later in 2019. The game's features, taken from the official website, are described as follows but will evolve as more is revealed:
- Wage war across hundreds of planets throughout the Inner Sphere.
- Explore hundreds of planets, each with unique terra and enemy strongholds with each playthrough.
- Calculate which contracts will earn you elite merc status the fastest.
- Customize your arsenal of weaponry.
“Getting to meet with MechWarrior’s most diehard fans and see them react to the team’s hard work at Mech_Con has become an incredible tradition for us," said Russ Bullock, president of Piranha Games, in the press release for the announcement. “The team has put so much work and passion into our mission to bring MechWarrior back into the spotlight, and seeing our excitement for what’s still to come for this classic series reverberate with the community in the room tonight was incredible.”
The sci-fi power fantasy of old, giant mechs, got some love this year and is getting a massive boost in 2019 with the launch of MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries. BattleTech made a valiant return with high-quality turn-based mech combat in the Kickstarted title from Harebrained Schemes. Outside of the MechWarrior and BattleTech world, virtual reality has been home to a collection of quality giant mech titles like Archangel: Hellfire. MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries will also tap the immersive platform with VR functionality, but it's not known if that feature will be available at launch.
