Ellen joins Ninja on Twitch, breaking his rule against streaming with females in the name of profit

Popular Fortnite streamer Tyler "Ninja" Blevins seems to have reversed his stance on streaming with women.

54

Twitch star Ninja has broken one of his own rules regarding live streaming with female players. The incredibly popular Fortnite streamer has previously gone on record saying that he does "not play with [females] at all," but he seemed to have no qualms against streaming live with television host Ellen Degeneres.

Why is it that Ninja had a policy against broadcasting with female streamers? According to an interview with Polygon, the notion was apparently meant to prevent rumors (and 'fake news' headlines) of salacious behavior.

"If I have one conversation with one female streamer where we're playing with one another, and even if there's a hint of flirting, that is going to be taken and going to be put on every single video and be clickbait forever," Blevins said. "The only way to avoid that is to not play with them at all."

Streaming Fortnite with a name as big as Ellen is obviously a big win for Ninja, even if Ellen didn't actually play the game, but doubling back on previously reported stances does seem iffy. Even though Ninja's goal is to avoid rumors and clickbait stories, there's little doubt that players will now assume that any rule can be broken with the right amount of cash. We're not saying that's the case this time around; we're just saying that line can easily be drawn.

Wait, what? You're seriously trying to compare Ninja playing Fortnite with Ellen to him playing with another Twitch streamer? What a waste of a news story.

He’s a relatively young dude who makes a million or so a month streaming on twitch and made a comment that he won’t play with other female streamers because he knows, as anyone intelligent does, that it will just turn into a horrible vindictive terrible situation not because of what he does or what she does, but because that is what it is to have 100,000 people watching you play a game.

lol he didn’t say he wouldn’t stream with females. He said he wouldn’t stream with other female streamers.

This is so gross. There’s so much awesomeness in this moment with Ellen being involved in pop gaming culture and yet you’re wanting the site’s stance to be pure negativity around it.

I fully expected to defend this article in the subthread(s) above but I really can't.

The tone is very shallow and borderline aggressive for absolutely no reason at all.

It is incredibly clear looking at the polygon articles (which ought to have been sourced with the quote in the lead, not after the break) it is incredibly clear that playing with Ellen is not even close to related.

Not only is Ellen not a female gamer or twith personality, but she is, more importantly, at the level of celebrity (not to mention married and lesbian) that the type of rumors Ninja is worried about clearly not a risk in this scenario. To somehow leap to the conclusion that he is breaking a rule due a "large amount of cash" is both silly and unfounded.

With that said, I think there is still a good article to be written here.

An article saying that Ninja's ability to play with Ellen while not fearing the repercussions that have worried him in the past is a step forward.
An article that discusses the what, if any, responsibility popular streamers like Ninja have to promote streamers of all genders and backgrounds; and how his policy against streaming with female gamers may undermine that.
An article about how Fortnite and Twitch are further increasing the popularity of video games in main stream markets. How the celebrity of video game streamers is starting to rival that of YouTube stars and enter the world of non-gamers entertainment (alongside Dota2 and LoL).

So many possible articles that I would like to have read. I genuinely expected this to be one of them; but instead I got this.

I get it, I'm not mad, click-baiting is common for a reason and if it keeps the lights on I'm ok with it from time to time, but I don't see how we can defend this particular piece.

Let’s assume he’s an immature child. Then from there let’s extrapolate the type of people who make up his 100,000 person audience at any given point in time. You wanna bring a female streamer into that? Ninja isn’t the issue. His audience is. And he knows that.

What a good and appropriate way to show that gender doesn't fucking matter and to instruct your mods to ban anyone who steps out of line. He has a platform to do good but chooses to abstain which does fuck all at best, if not harm female streamers/players in the long run due to his influence.

Don't actors refuse working with people all the time for various reasons, personal or otherwise? And what he does isn't really on the level of importance of being a doctor or lawyer.

I don't particularly agree with his decision or reasoning but I also don't think streamers should be forced to stream with people they don't want in order to meet some equality quota.

Lebron James doesn't play with women. Tom Brady doesn't play with women. Clayton Kershaw doesn't play with women. Why aren't they using their platform in front of millions to advocate that men and women are equal and can play in the same league?

Ninja doesn't want to play with female streamers because of the drama he wants to avoid. Just because he's popular doesn't mean he needs to be a crusader for women's rights. If he was, that would be a great thing! But the dude is just trying to make money and enjoy his life.
