Two of the biggest franchises that might come to mind when gamers think about boxing are Super Punch Out and the Rocky films. And, as it turns out, the arcade-style boxing gameplay of the former and the cinematic universe of the latter are being combined in upcoming VR title Creed: Rise to Glory. Shacknews had a chance to get together with Eugene Elkin, project and engineering lead for developer Servios, to talk more about the VR boxing experience and get a few special glimpses of the virtual fisticuffs in action.

Utilizing the developer's own proprietary Phantom Melee technology, Creed allows players to get a more arcade feel from the game's boxing experience when compared to similar boxing titles on the recent market. Instead of being rooted in strict realism, Elkin said Creed's fighting dynamic makes punching and getting punched feel "really juicy," which is certainly a descriptive way to describe the sensation of hitting someone. More than that, the developers went for a gameplay feel that's distinctly cinematic, with perfectly timed ducks resulting in a slow-motion effect that opens up a window for a proper return strike, or hard incoming strikes actually knocking the fighter's consciousness out of their body.

Creed: Rise to Glory still doesn't have an official release date, but players with an Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, or PlayStation VR headset can expect to get their juicy hits in sometime later this year. PlayStation VR owners will also be granted access to a platform-exclusive young Rocky Balboa character.

All those burgeoning young fighters who can't wait to get their hands on Servios' latest would do well to check out Shacknews' Creed: Rise to Glory hands-on preview from GDC 2018.
