E3 2018 Sony Recap: Last of Us 2, Ghost of Tsushima, Death Stranding, & Other Trailers and Reveals
We recap all of the must-know reveals from Sony's E3 2018 briefing, including God of War, Resident Evil 2, Kingdom Hearts 3, Spider-Man, and more.
Aside from Microsoft's Xbox briefing, Sony's E3 2018 briefing was the show to watch for console gamers looking for the latest video game highlights. That's a good thing, as Sony had a ton of great new content on display, including fresh news for God of War and Destiny 2, plus all-new trailers for games like Resident Evil 2, The Last of Us 2, Spider-Man, Death Stranding, and more.
God of War
Sony's E3 2018 briefing kicked off in great style, and following up on an extended look at The Last of Us 2, the presenters took a brief intermission where they revealed that God of War would soon be updated to include a New Game+ mode that will allow players to begin an all-new journey through God of War while keeping several of the upgrades they earned through their previous runs.
Destiny 2: Forsaken
During Sony's E3 2018 press conference, we got a somber new look at Destiny 2: Forsaken, with a trailer showing off Cayde-6, who appears to have been shot.
Black Ops 3
What? Black Ops 3 made an E3 2018 appearance? Well, yes and no. Though no new footage or DLC for the game was announced, the presenters did reveal that Black Ops 3 will be available entirely for free for PlayStation Plus subscribers for tonight. Players should move fast, as this deal likely won't last. Until then, enjoy some Shacknews exclusive Black Ops 4 Domination gameplay footage.
The Last of Us 2
Naughty Dog has shown off more heart-racing footage of The Last of Us Part 2 at this year’s Sony E3 Press Conference in an all-new 12-minute gameplay trailer. What started off rather nicely at a dance quickly descended into bloody murder with Ellie escaping from bandits.
Control
At Sony's annual E3 press conference, Remedy and 505 Games announced Control, a trippy, M. C. Escher-like game for multiple platforms. The gameplay footage depicted a world that seems malleable, almost Inception-esque, and the main character uses telekinesis to manipulate objects.
Kingdom Hearts 3
There's been an awful lot of Kingdom Hearts 3 revealed so far at E3 2018 to make up for the fact that it's been delayed to 2019. After a new trailer during Sunday's Xbox E3 Briefing and an extended trailer during Monday's Square Enix Showcase, another Kingdom Hearts III trailer popped up during Monday's PlayStation E3 presentation. And this time around, it's a new trailer confirming a returning world from the second game.
Ghost of Tsushima
Originally announced back in 2017 at PGW, Ghost of Tsushima is the newest game from Sucker Punch Studios, makers of the Infamous franchise. Tonight in Los Angeles, the public got its first glimpse of the game in motion during Sony’s pre-E3 press briefing. The trailer opens to find the protagonist riding a horse across a flower-painted meadow, then jumps into sword fighting against an invading Mongolian force.
Trover Saves the Universe
There's been more than a few eccentric moments during Sony's E3 2018 briefing, but some of the most obvious of those moments came from the instantly recognizable co-creator of sci-fi cartoon series Rick and Morty. That's right, Justin Roiland has revealed his newest title Trover Saves The Universe, an upcoming title from Squanch Games coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR.
Deracine
As a sort of epilogue to Sony's E3 press conference, Dark Souls and Seriko: Shadows Die Twice developer FromSoftware unveiled Deracine, a new property being developed for PlayStation VR. The game's new trailer indicates that Deracine will be a more narrative-driven title than the "Soulsborne" games FromSoftware has been developing since the release of Demon's Souls in 2009.
Nioh 2
Nioh 2, the long-awaited sequel to Team Ninja's excellent action title Nioh, has finally been confirmed during today's PlayStation E3 2018 press conference. There wasn't a lot of fanfare surrounding the title beyond a brief teaser trailer, but that's enough to whet our appetites for all things Nioh and Team Ninja, since everything they seem to make turns to gold as of late.
Resident Evil 2
Get ready to return to Raccoon City because the Resident Evil 2 remake is arriving January 25, 2019. This major reveal has been a long time coming, with fans all over the world waiting with baited breath ever since the game was announced as “in development” some three years ago.
Spider-Man
In an evening full of head-turning trailers, Insomniac’s Spider-Man’s may have been the wildest. The Spider-Man clip ended the show for Sony and was the most detailed look at gameplay that has been seen since the game was announced. While the first gameplay footage was shown at last year’s E3, this year’s footage is likely to be much closer to what we will see in-game when Spider-Man swings onto the PS4 September 7.
Death Stranding
As expected, the Sony E3 2018 press conference featured some gameplay from Death Stranding, the upcoming PlayStation exclusive from Hideo Kojima. The trailer lasted several minutes and revealed that Sam (Norman Reedus), part of Corpse Disposal Team 6, was a delivery man of sorts. Perhaps more intriguing, though, was the introduction of a female character. We didn’t get her name, but she did ask Sam if he knew who she was.
The pre-E3 press conferences are nearly complete, but the E3 news isn't set to stop flowing any time soon. Stay on top of the latest E3 2018 coverage by keeping it tuned right here to Shacknews.
