Grand Theft Auto 5 Sells A Whopping 95 Million Copies Worldwide
Onward and upward.
How do you print money? Ask Nintendo. How do you print more money? Ask Rockstar Games, because Grand Theft Auto 5 has sold a staggering amount of copies. How many? Try a cool 95 million copies worldwide, ever since the game debuted back in 2013.
Publisher Take-Two made the announcement during a recent earnings call, where company CEO and chairman Strauss Zelnick stated that the game has a lot to owe its GTA Online multiplayer mode and the core campaign as well. That's not just Zelnick telling tall tales, either. It's obvious that GTA Online is still attracting a ton of players, as Take-Two stated it even generated what the company sees as "record results" in the year's fourth quarter.
"Grand Theft Auto has sold over 95 million units and according to others apart from us, it's the highest growth and most profitable entertainment product ever made of any sort," said Zelnick.
"So it's not only exciting to a small core, it’s exciting to a very, very broad audience. You can approach Grand Theft Auto and Grand Theft Auto Online in any number of ways. And if you are a hardcore gamer, you can find it super compelling and if you are somewhat more casual you can find the experience super compelling and there is so much there now."
Grand Theft Auto 5 has had a ton of regular updates since it debuted five years ago, most of which focus on the game's multiplayer component. It looks like as long as it continues to sell copies like gangbusters, we're going to continue to see the 95 million unit number rising exponentially over the next few years. Next stop, 100 million?
