Wave Race Revival Could Be Splashing Onto Nintendo Switch
More than twenty-five years since Wave Race first hit the water on the Game Boy, the series producer hints at more to come.
Nobody loves dredging up old IP, polishing it up real nice, and selling millions of copies on new hardware like the folks at Nintendo. Each new hardware iteration gets its Mario, Zelda, Kirby, and the rest. The Jet-Ski racing classic Wave Race is one of Nintendo’s oldest franchises, but has remained dormant for years, failing to appear on the Wii, Wii U, or various incarnations of the DS. That narrative could soon be changing. Series producer Shinya Takahashi recently made some comments at the BAFTA awards that are sure to begin churning the waters towards a revival of the beloved racer.
The folks at Fandom had a chance to chat with Takahashi during the BAFTA awards and directly asked him about the Wave Race series. “You may see that game again,” Takahashi said. “We have been trying to make many games and that may be one of them … I personally love Wave Race!”
While this statement is no guarantee of an impending Wave Race release for the Switch, it is better than nothing and is sure to whip fans into a frenzy of hype. It was less than two years ago that Nintendo registered trademarks for Wave Race in Europe. The Switch is still selling like crazy and Nintendo would be foolish not to push out as much software as it can. We can only hope that we get a wet surprise at a future Nintendo Direct.
