Asymmetrical Shooter Aftercharge Coming to Switch with Cross-Platform Play
The latest 3v3 title from indie studio Chainsawesome Games will come to Switch complete with cross-platform support.
One of the more exciting games the Shacknews crew saw at this year's Game Developers Conference is Aftercharge, an upcoming 3v3 asymmetrical shooter that pits a team of invisible robots against a team of invincible humans. As far as we can tell, it's a multiplayer game that doesn't mind thinking outside of the box, and now we know that it will be landing on Nintendo's popular Switch hardware.
Given the invincible vs. invisible dynamic, it might be a little hard for players to grasp the core concept behind Aftercharge. Fortunately, we had the chance to talk with Jean Simon Otis, technical director and co-founder of developer Chainsawesome Games, at GDC 2018 to discuss a few of the game's finer points and design inspirations.
Beyond the unusual asymmetrical dynamic, Aftercharge will task players with either protecting or destroying six extractors set at different points across the map. The invincible Enforcers will be able to lay down traps and employ a number of tools that can help them hone in on the robots' locations, while the robots themselves will have to rely on stealth and strategy to get around the enemies and destroy the extractors. Interested players should certainly check out our hands-on preview of Aftercharge to learn more about the game's unusual mechanics.
We knew that Aftercharge was planned to release for Xbox One and Steam, but we've just gotten word that the game will be coming to the Nintendo Switch as well. Even better, Aftercharge on the Switch will support cross-platform play, meaning Switch players can enjoy the game with their PC and home console friends and vice versa.
Needless to say, this is fantastic news for Nintendo Switch owners. Nintendo's hybrid handheld has certainly earned its fair share of independently developed titles by now, but seeing a fast-paced, team-based first-person shooter landing on the Switch with full cross-platform play is very exciting. Fans will be able to get their hands on Aftercharge for either Steam, Xbox One, or Nintendo Switch sometime this summer.
