GDC 2018: Magic Leap Opens Door To Developers With Technical Builds of SDK & Creator Portal
Content creators have an opportunity to get hands-on with the spatial computing platform. The Creator Edition of the headset is due this year.
Magic Leap is taking significant steps toward entering the homes of developers this year, spearheaded by the reveal of the Creator Edition of the AR headset. The Magic Leap One and upcoming Creator Portal are in place to entice creatives to develop for the platform and the next step is a technical preview of that portal and the Magic Leap SDK, which is the first time developers get hands-on with the spatial computing platform.
Magic Leap recently revealed a partnership that will bring some live NBA AR content to the platform, but this latest announcement will give creators a blank canvas to do what they wish as early adopters. This statement comes from the official Magic Leap blog:
At Magic Leap, we’ve worked with some of the world’s leading creators, designing digital experiences that blend seamlessly with reality, enriching the physical space around us with objects and characters that respond to and interact with their surroundings. Along the way, we’ve learned countless lessons and evolved the way we think about creating for this new spatial computing platform. Now, it’s time to start sharing those learnings. We are excited to invite creators, artists, innovators and developers to come with us — early on in this journey — into the next phase of computing.
In addition to the Creator Portal and SDK technical previews, creators can also download technical preview builds of Unreal Engine 4 and Unity for the Magic Leap. This sets off a crucial moment for the Leap, a moment that will set a standard for the platform and show consumers and other creators what it is capable of. Considering the Leap is at the forefront of AR alongside Hololens, this will likely influence the AR industry on a broader scale as well so, creators, dive into the program and see what augmented reality on the Magic Leap has to offer. The Creator Edition is due sometime in 2018.
