Fortnite's Halloween Event Introduces Character Customization and Leaderboards

The Save The World and Battle Royale modes are in haunting moods and Epic is using the spooky event to introduce major new features to their survival shooter.

The competitive survival shooter competition is getting spooky for a little while as Epic Games adds some Halloween themed changes to Fortnite in the Fortnitemares update. Not only are there some cool cosmetic items to earn, Battle Royale is getting a long-awaited leaderboard update in addition to bringing voice-chat to PS4 and Xbox One players.

The most notable additions to the Fornite family are the Leaderboards and Season Levels for the Battle Royale mode. On the boards, players will be ranked across three criteria: Wins, top 10 placements, and top 25 placements. Seasons gives players an opportunity to level-up their character, something the development team hopes will deter cheating because of the threat of being banned, and allow users to earn seasonal rewards and banner flair.

This update is also the debut of character customization. In Battle Royale, players can visit the item shop to grab outfits and skins for their gliders and pickaxes. Items are purchased with v-bucks, Fortnite's attempt at microtransactions. The Locker is the new space where players can equip any of their purchased cosmetics.

In a recent update, voice-chat went live for PC players with players expecting the feature in the near future. They didn't have to wait long as Xbox One and PS4 players can now chat with squad mates outside of party chat.

  • PC players have push-to-talk enabled by default. Bound to the Y key.
  • PlayStation 4 and Xbox One player’s mics are voice activated by default.
  • Voice chat is enabled by default, but you can turn it off in the Audio Options menu.
  • Note that PC players also have the ability to team voice chat, which we added in the previous update.

The Save The World base mode isn't missing out on all the fun, thankfully. The mode has a new stormscape called Hexsylvania filled with creepy dwellings and a new mission that focuses on reinforcing existing buildings instead of building from scratch. The new space has 36 new quests and there are new Halloween-themed creatures you'll have to fend off as well.

The Fornitemare update is incredibly dense with updates, including details on the new regenerative item Slurp Juice, so take a look at the full patch notes on the Fornite blog.
