Battleborn Isn't Dead, It Moved Up North To Live With Duke Nukem

"Those alien bastards are gonna pay for not supporting Battleborn..."

Despite a year that started with a massive update that included a new hero and a summer that sought to entice new players with free multiplayer access, Gearbox is wrapping up continued support for Battleborn. The game typically receives period content updates and balancing via Battleplans, but a Gearbox developer has confirmed continued updates will end in August as the team shifts its focus to the next game.

The update, reported by VG247, linked to a message from Battleborn's Creative Director Randy Varnell:

"As of this week, there will be no more Battleplans and there is currently no planned content after the Fall Update," he says in a forum post. "Details of any future changes or news will be made on our forums or through social media, so keep your radars on."

Despite shutting down the Battleplan updates, Varnell says that the game is "here to stay" and that the servers for the multiplayer shooter will be "up and active for the foreseeable future". The fall update is going to include updated art, finisher boosts, taunts, and balance changes. Unless something changes, current players better be happy with how their favorite characters operate since future balances are nixed. Nevertheless, it's exciting to see that the team working on Borderlands 3 is seemingly shifting from 90% to 100%.

"I’ve been working on Battleborn nearly exclusively since 2012, and in some ways, that work stretches back to 2009 for me," Varnell says. "It’s been a long labor of love with many of my good friends at Gearbox, and I’m proud to have shared that journey with you, our community. Your spirit and loyalty have been a constant inspiration to the team at Gearbox."

This is truly unfortunate news for those who continued to support Battleborn despite it having to live in the shadow of Blizzard's Overwatch. One could think that the game's situation is simply a product of poor timing and marketing, considering it did provide an arguably more dense experience at launch.

It's actually a really fun game, a lot more innovative than Overwatch,

I think it was gutsy to go up against Overwatch.

First new Blizzard IP since the 90s? Yeah..I woulda pushed it back and polished the shit out of it for another 6 months.

Servers shutdown late 2018, I'm guessing.

I enjoyed the hell out of it for a few weeks. I think it's a well put together game. My only complaint was, and I don't know if this is just me being old or something, there was often so much shit going on on the screen that I had a hard time telling what was going on. When you are at a pinch point and people are going nuts with abilities and shooting... I had a hard time tracking stuff. Good game though.
