Gearbox Software's New FPS Game is Codenamed Project 1v1
An anonymous tipster sent us a link to what appears to be a new game from the folks at Gearbox Software. 1v1 me, bro!
Shacknews received a tip today regarding a new game from Gearbox Software. The tipster provided a link to the Project 1v1 website. We had not heard of this game, and Gearbox has made no mention of it anywhere. The site describes the game as follows:
"Project 1v1 is the code name for Gearbox's top-secret, in-development, competitive first-person shooter that combines the action of fast-paced 1v1 first-person combat with the metagame strategy of a collectible card game.
Project 1v1 will be holding a short Closed Technical Test this summer. We are looking for a limited number of players to test the online infrastructure and learn what players like you think about the game in order to inform and influence future development. The test will be held on North American servers, so international players may experience decreased performance."
While they refer to it as "top-secret," they are certainly doing a poor job of keeping it that way. The site is easily viewable and even contains a link to a short Project 1v1 Closed Technical Test to be conducted some time this summer. The Closed Technical Test will have three modes:
- RANKED: Match with an opponent based on player rating. Win ranked matches to earn experience and crates containing new cards.
- CHALLENGE: Challenge your friend to an unranked match.
- ARENA: Queue up to challenge the current Arena champion – and win to take their place.
We will be reaching out to Gearbox Software for comment and will also be requesting a 1v1 battle with the founders of Shacknews.com, Steve Gibson and Maarten Goldstein.

Blizzard made Hearthstone for its Warcraft property, Bethesda made Elder Scrolls Legends for its Elder Scrolls property, I wouldn’t be surprised if this is Gearbox’s card game for their Borderlands property. Or maybe Battleborn.
And watch Blizzard release an Overwatch expansion three weeks before 1v1 launches...
