Nintendo's 'SNES Classic' Announced, Includes Star Fox 2 and 20 More Games

The next in Nintendo's minature console line features a slate of 21 games, including some rarities, for $79.99.

Nintendo has announced the SNES Classic Edition, another miniaturized plug-and-play console pre-loaded with a host of games from its 16-bit era. To sweeten the pot this time, the line-up includes some rare and never-released games.

It will come loaded with 21 games in all–venerated Nintendo classics like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Super Mario World right alongside third-party games like Mega Man X, Secret of Mana, and Final Fantasy 3. For fans of game history, the SNES Classic includes Star Fox 2, the sequel that was developed but never actually released during the SNES era.

SNES Classic will launch on September 29 for $79.99. It will also come with not one but two Super NES styled controllers, to accommodate the two-player games included in the set like Contra 3: The Alien Wars and Street Fighter 2.

We had previously heard rumors of the SNES Classic Edition, which we concluded made sense as the explanation for Nintendo's plan to discontinue the wildly successful NES Classic. Now we know it was true. Check below for the full line-up of games:

  • Contra III: The Alien Wars
  • Donkey Kong Country
  • EarthBound
  • Final Fantasy III
  • F-ZERO
  • Kirby Super Star
  • Kirby’s Dream Course

Another thing to collect dust, if you can find it.
Give me Virtual Console on Switch or I won't spend any money on this junk.

So few details on Virtual Console thus far and no SNES games announced. If you want a quick way to play SNES games on your TV and don't want to deal with emulators on your PC, this is your best bet. $80 is a good price for this games list + hardware.

If you want two controllers I think the Super NES Classic might come out ahead on price. Those 8bitdo controllers aren't cheap, though they are wireless which is pretty nice.

Yeah. And frankly $80 for the console, gamepads, and 20 games of that quality is a fantastic deal.

If you can get ahold of one there's very little reason not to go with it.

That's a pretty solid list. I might replace one of the Kirby games with Chrono, but I can't really complain about any of those choices.

And Starfox 2 is just super surprising.

kirby's dream course seems like the weird one that could have been something else. kirby super star is the one you'd want on there with traditional kirby platforming.

Honestly I'd have traded out Super Ghoul's 'n Ghosts for a Shmup or something as well, it was popular at the time but is kind of a shitty game to play nowadays.

you can play a shmup on any platform and they're all basically the same though. no loss imo

They're very much not all the same. If you're not a fan of the genre, fine, but that's no less silly than claiming all platformers or all fighters are the same.

If they'd make more than 30 of them I'd be interested. I agree with Boarder2, though in that I'd rather have this stuff on VC on the switch/3ds/etc.

The 3DS already has a lot of these on its VC, and the Switch games service is coming; Nintendo has already said that. They just aren't announcing details until it's ready.

Yoshi's Island is one of the best 2D platformers ever. It's sad that the series hasn't been able to live up to it since then and I honestly am glad that it's there as opposed to DKC2 (which I'm a bit sad they don't have in there, but it does have the original so I think I'll be ok).

Wooly World is very good, but yeah, took them 20 years to make something else good in the series.

The core games were good, but outside of that the technology and knowhow just weren't there yet. I can say the same for the Playstation. Things hadn't really been hashed out until the Gamecube/PS2 era. Awkward puberty of console gaming, etc

Exactly. I feel like the N64/Sega Saturn/PS1 era was basically the same for 3D gaming as the Atari era was for 2D gaming.

I have to agree. PC games during that era were light-years past. And not like now where they are just prettier with better framerates. You look at the FPS lineup on N64 and PSX compared to PC and it wasn't even close 1996-2000, just another world.

No one had figured out a close enough approximation. Golden Eye was great because it gave the "console gaming masses" a taste of what LAN parties were back then. At the time all prior attempts (see Wolf3D and Doom in particular) ported quite poorly compared to their original PC versions.

Golden Eye was great for consoles. And Mario / Zelda / Metal Gear / FFVII were all great.

But PCs were getting GL Quake World, Duke 3d, Command and Conquer, Warcraft II, Total Annihilation, Half-Life, etc. The level of sophistication was unmatched, at the time.

I was just talking about FPS's. Outside of that you basically had western RPGs on PC and JRPGs on consoles. You don't hear about PC only platformers or anything like that of that era because Commander Keen couldn't compare to Mario. Certain control schemes just work better for certain game designs. They never got RTSs working well on consoles, for instance.

They were and they weren't. Very important things like analog stick movement, z-trigger lock-on, and complex 3D dungeons were figured out by Nintendo.

PC had FPS nailed down but third person movement and console shooter mechanics were nailed down by Super Mario 64 and Ocarina Of Time. Its kind of insane that the mechanics of Navi the fairy is used by nearly every console shooter and 3D RPG to this day.
