Want an external graphics card in a Thunderbolt 3 case to soup up your MacBook Pro? Gigabyte is offering a package deal on the external box with USB-C connectors housing a GTX 1070 for about $600.

The Aorus 1070 Gaming Box comes with an 8GB version of the GTX 1070 (1,531MHz that can be boosted to 1,721MHz), and HDMI, DisplayPort, and dual DVI connections on the graphics card, as well as Thunderbolt 3. It also has four USB 3.0 ports for connecting extra peripherals and a 450-watt power supply, with a mesh screen on the side to aid in cooling of the high-performance card. The unit weighs a hefty 2KG, which is attributed mostly to the power supply.

The Gaming Box was shown off at Computex 2017 in Taipei, Taiwan. Gigabyte expects to start selling the combo in the near future under the SKU GV-N1070IXEB-8GD.

I'm guessing this will only reliably work correctly with Gigabyte laptops that were specifically designed in concert with the housing. I'd love to be proven wrong, but that seems to be the pattern for these kinds of things. PCI-E over Thunderbolt apparently isn't terribly robust.

It seems to be up to the drivers. Initial releases were indeed jank, with external graphics docks but most manufacturers have been improving speed and compatibility with help from the Thunderbolt IC makers.

Support will get even better soon, when Coffee Lake and Cannon Lake Intel CPUs drop - they have Thunderbolt 3 built into the chipset.
