Gonna repost this since the thread expired and it helped a lot of people last night.
If Steam is always slow and laggy for you, do this:
So after years of thinking the Steam interface was just naturally slow, I decided to try to fix it. After 30 seconds of searching I found this, posted by rajrajlasse on the Steam forums: "Something which helped me was removing the automatic detection of proxys in windows. Enter control panel, internet options, connections, LAN settings and uncheck "Automatic detect settings" or something similar. I got the tip in another thread and strangely this sped up the interface by an incredible amount."
I felt incredibly stupid when it worked. No more waiting 15 seconds or so every time I swap over to the store, or back to my games list. If you too have always though that Steam was just slow and that was it, try turning off the automatic detection of LAN settings in IE. Then feel stupid that you never tried it before. Then feel angry that Steam still uses IE settings.

Can anyone recommend and good low-fantasy books? I'm digging GoT but part of me wants to read a good story that is on a slightly smaller scale. -
11 tagsIn response to some of the search issues we’ve been having lately...
WinChatty NuSearch is a search engine for the Shacknews comments. It uses its own comments database, and thus it is impervious to Shacknews search outages. (It may have its own outages, but hopefully they won't be at the same time as Shacknews search outages!) It improves on the original WinChatty Search and introduces support for the current iteration of the Shacknews website.
URL: http://winchatty.com/nusearch
@ New comments are indexed every five minutes.
@ Old comments are indexed slowly, working backwards through time.
@ No retention limit. Eventually all comments will be indexed.
@ Multi-term searches work properly (logical AND).
@ Shacktags show up. Moderation flags show up and are searchable (even without search terms).
@ Hover over a search result to see the complete post text.
@ Future applications and APIs will be enabled by this database. More complex search queries will also possible.
Please send me bug reports. This is barely tested. I mean... barely. I hacked it together over the past few nights. The database is small at the moment (about 2 weeks of posts) but this will continually improve. If indexer bugs are discovered I may have to nuke the database and start over but it's nbd.
I will bump the thread throughout the day so everyone sees it. Tell your friends!! ♥ -

Great book, a bit preachy at times and really obsessed with technical analysis. But still
I plan on buying this book next, which I think is the gold standard from what previews I've read:

11 tagsBF4 Tweaks for Improved FPS and Real-Time Animations
Need another BF4 Thread? Of course you do.
This time, check out this video from rivalXfactor.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QkfIFP0g2xY
He recommends an utility that "unparks" your cores so that your cpu is using it's maximum potential. I noticed an immediate and significant increase of FPS as much as 20-30 fps. Is there a downside to using this?
Also, I watched a BF3 video showcasing "Network Smoothing Factor" and the immediate consensus was put this setting down to 0. It defaults to 50%. The setting has nothing to do with hit registration and more so with how you see enemies. Ever feel like an enemy shot you before you really even saw him round a corner? That's due to Network Smoothing Factor. This setting at 0 will show you exactly where the enemy is instead of trying to smooth out the animation...at least that's the best way I can explain it.
