I couldn't agree with this more. I'm in the middle of my own divorce, and the lead-up to it went very similarly.

For me, the big trigger was finding a series of text messages to an old boyfriend of hers, with whom she'd had an affair early in our marriage, saying she was planning to move in with him after our son graduated. To use your terms: that is when I started withdrawing and resisting.

That happened on Thanksgiving day. By mid February, she'd damn near had me convinced I was reading too much into it.

Then I was using her phone for navigation when another text came in from that guy. I read the recent history and it was even worse than before. She was talking about sleeping with him, how hard it was to sneak around to see him, and so on.

It was clear she was just using me for a comfortable life until she reached a point where she could leave me.

To this day, she's not come clean. She insists it's my fault she had those conversations, and that nothing came of them. She says it was all "just a joke," as if there's anything funny. It's incredibly hurtful.
