After April 15, inmates at the Adult Detention Center in Lowndes County, Mississippi will no longer be allowed to visit with family members face to face. Newton County, Missouri, implemented an in-person visitor ban last month. The Allen County Jail in Indiana phased out in-person visits earlier this year.

All three changes are part of a nationwide trend toward "video visitation" services. Instead of seeing their loved ones face to face, inmates are increasingly limited to talking to them through video terminals. Most jails give family members a choice between using video terminals at the jail—which are free—or paying fees to make calls from home using a PC or mobile device.

Just found out my dad has cancer. I can't describe how much I'm looking forward to being told he's going to hell by my in-laws if he doesn't "get right with Jesus." It'll probably be conveyed by my alcoholic father in law after he's tied one on in the back room. But who knows, maybe my brother in-law will tag in on this one. They made sure to let me know that info last time when my grandma had terminal cancer. That was pleasant.

Gonna take a lot of serenity and will power to make it through that, if it happens. Hopefully not.

The letter stated, because her birth certificate was not issued at a institution or hospital, it was not considered proof enough of her citizenship.

She received a letter asking her to submit any number of the listed additional documents.

“Border crossing card or green card for your parents issued prior to your birth? My parents were born in the United States….Early religious records? We don’t have any. Family Bible? They won’t accept a birth certificate but they will accept a family Bible?” Barbara said.
