Hey NAS people, or those of you who want to become NAS people...

There are a bunch of us around here who love the crap out of our Synology systems. The main reason being the software is pretty fantastic all around. The only negative really is that the Synology hardware is kind of expensive if you want an Intel based solution instead of ARM or the like.

Well there is some pretty great news. There's been a way for a while now to install the Synology software (called DSM) on your own hardware via a special bootloader. I transformed a 3 year old HTPC that I was no longer using into a pretty powerful NAS.

Basically the way it works is you download the bootloader called Nanoboot to a USB drive, boot from that and then install the DSM software as per normal Synology steps. Nanoboot tricks the DSM into thinking you're running a Synology NAS. This is the guide I followed: http://cyanlabs.net/Thread-Install-Synology-DSM-5-0-4493-ESXi-Non-ESXI The way that guide is written requires you to keep the USB drive in the server and always boot from it, but I've read it's possible to work around that. I honestly haven't bothered because everything is running beautifully so why fuck with it.

There are also steps for installing it in a VM which is pretty sweet if that's your thing. Otherwise it was very simple to get up and running. Also, I took a calculated risk and was actually able to pull my drives out of my working Synology NAS and drop them into this "hacked" box and believe it or not, everything worked and no data was lost. I'm not going to necessarily recommend you do that if you already run a Synology because A) I was not running RAID and am not sure if it's possible to do in a RAID config and B) It's stupidly easy to accidentally wipe your data during the DSM install. However if you're curious, I installed the DSM on a blank drive I wasn't planning on using in the NAS, got DSM up and running, and then dropped my two Synology drives into the new box. Synology "repaired" them and then I simply removed the original volume and kept the two old drives.

Caveats are you obviously don't quality for official Synology support, so if your shit goes tits up for some reason and you need Synology to bail you out (it's happened to me in the past), you're on your own. And also when new versions of DSM are released, you have to wait for the Nanoboot to be updated along with it; you can't just update your system via the normal update process. Oh, and for some reason it would only recognize the first 4 SATA ports in my system (I have 6). Not sure if that's a DSM limitation or something with the hack.

I've got a kitchen protip for you. I work in biotech and one of the things you use in the lab all the time is laboratory labeling tape. It's basically special colored tape that you can tear off and stick on a sample before you store it in the freezer. I realized that this stuff beats the everloving shit out of any other kitchen labels, so I started using it to label leftovers before they go in the freezer.

It will stay sticky when hot or extremely cold. it's designed to stay on even at -80 C (your kitchen freezer is only about -10 to -20C)
It's waterproof, so it will stay on when wet
you can still easily peel it off with your fingernail even when it's below freezing
Designed to be written on

The downside of course it it's way more expensive than normal-person labels. Still, I think it's cool, so I thought I'd share.
