34 unfsHey Chatty,
I wanted to share some exciting news with you. Last Friday, I published Doom: To Hell and Back, a novel-sized (40k words!) deep dive into the making of "Doom 2016," and the original Doom's community, level design, and weapons. That was four days ago. In that short span of time, the feature cracked 10,000 views and is still going strong.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for engaging with this feature. The team and I are tremendously proud of how it turned out, and on a personal level, I feel vindicated by the response. I'm usually the last person in the world to give a hoot about page views and that sort of statistic; I'm of the "if you build it, they will come" mentality when it comes to writing. I was happy with it before it went live, but secretly, I was terrified.
I've long believed that there's a vacuum on the Internet for long-form, well-written (he said humbly) content. Every trend says other ways. In a world where logic lists and other fluff features dominate YouTube and Buzzfeed, and many other websites rolled in popular culture coverage because writing about games wasn't enough to keep the lights on, this feature left a sizable footprint. Best of all, I had the full support of Asif, Steve, and the rest of the team. It would have been easy to carve it up. In fact I suggested doing just that at one point because I was exhausted and worried that the book-sized behemoth would come and go without so much as a click.
It's so gratifying--and such a relief--to know the long, long hours were worth it. Thanks for reading it, and thanks for sharing it. If you somehow missed it, here's a link. http://www.shacknews.com/article/99662/doom-to-hell-and-back -

34 unfsI don't think Shacknews will die, but I guess I am biased.
We are doing our best to implement a turnaround strategy. We are experimenting, failing, dusting ourselves off, and trying again. This is a process, and we are doing everything we can to bring Shacknews back to its rightful place in the games media universe.
I would point out that much larger websites have shut down in the last few months (Joystiq, GigaOm, etc.). The games media is at a crossroads. This does not mean that a website cannot survive or thrive going forward.
Gamerhub was on the verge of profitability when we acquired Shacknews. We continue to have tremendous growth on our content network. It may be hard for Shackers to see, but the combined Shacknews/Gamerhub entity is not doing as bad financially as it seems. It is our goal to be running at breakeven, and we are starting to see sales growth.
I know that it is easy to look at this site negatively, but I remain optimistic about the future.
I am not done with Shacknews. I was given a challenge and an opportunity when I bought the Shack. I have an obligation to the founders and the community to leave the website better than when I got here when my time is up. -
