Watching my parents get old is getting to me. They are both 76 now. My mom is still really good mentally and mostly good physically. My dad, however, has never taken care of himself like mom and it's starting to show mentally. He was a programmer for 40+ years, and was always super sharp and smart, but I'm seeing serious decline now.
He called a number on a very obvious phishing email today that purportedly was from PayPal (he buys a lot of stuff on eBay so that in itself wouldn't be unusual. However, the sender address was very obviously not from PayPal.). They had him go to a website and enter the address for his bank and started talking about Bitcoin. Mom called me about that time and asked me what to do. I had them hang up and shut off the computer and call their bank. Apparently the scammer has already gotten into their bank account and transferred all of their money from their savings account into their checking account (I assume in preparation to transfer it to another account or buy Bitcoin). The bank was able to move the money back and reset his password. I looked at his laptop and they used some fake remote support client that most likey had a key logger on it. I nuked that computer from orbit and am reinstalling Windows now.
I'm not sure how to handle this kind of thing. It's just me here. My little brother is on the other side of the world and is busy with his own family. He doesn't keep close contact at all because of that.I don't have a lot friends and I don't want to bother them with it anyway. I don't have a girlfriend. I'm glad this website is still around. I'd probably be crazy by now otherwise.
