Parents of 2 to 4 year olds

Based on a recommendation from the Tested.com podcast I ordered this board game from Amazon for my 2.5 year old:

First Orchard

The basic premise is there are 4 trees with corresponding colored fruit and a crow attempting to get into the orchard to ruin everything. Simply roll the die to determine if you can pluck one of the fruits or if the crow advances toward the orchard. It’s cooperative in the sense that everyone is trying to pick all the fruits before the crow makes it into the orchard.

I thought he'd be too young for any kind of board game but this definitely got him engaged. Over time it taught him how to be patient and wait his turn, roll a dice, and the prospect of losing (though that last one didn't really sink in until we played about 5 times). I was really surprised how well he “got it” after explaining a couple times. I’m constantly underestimating toddlers!

He will sometimes choose to play the board game instead of watching Thomas the Tank Engine after dinner. That’s how much he likes it :)

Anyone got some other board game recommendations for a 2 year old?

Creating a Doom-style 3D engine in C

This video is crazy. This guy first prototypes simple 3D perspective projection in Basic (yes you read that right). He then goes on to build a more robust 3D rendering engine on about the same complexity level of the original Doom 1/2 in C. His engine uses the sector/portal approach, which was the predominate 3D interior space rendering technique through the mid- to late-90's. Although I'd read quite a few articles on how to create a sector/portal 3D engine, this video helped to break it down step-by-step and shed light on the approach.

The guy's narrative is very dry and hard to listen to, but it's still a very cool video and I found it quite informative. It's definitely worth a watch if you're into programming or are interested how games work under the hood.
