I'm 42 years old and I just resigned from an employer for the first time.

I've made internal transfers before, but all my previous "leave company X" experiences have been involuntary (first went belly-up, second was a short-term contract, third was laid-off). Feels weird. I like my boss and my team a lot, but a 30% bump in base salary, higher bonus, and no on-call rotation for probably a year or more is too good to pass up.

So about two months ago I started writing a complete Desktop environment, largely modeled on Windows 7. I did it initially as a test of how well you could use native web components in current browsers.

    My current progress? Well:

The only core app I can think of that I don't have yet is a text editor, and that's coming. The desktop has reliable, solid window management that works exactly as you'd expect, everything smoothly transitions and scales in on window open, and fades away when closed, just like you'd expect on a modern composited desktop.

Edge and Safari get transparent windows out of the box. Chrome gets them if the user enables a flag. Firefox is the sole modern browser with no way to get them, and the experience there still looks nice, with glass reflection effects and user-themable windows, just no transparency. Firefox and Chrome are both committed to supporting the backdrop-filter feature I use, so it's just a matter of time before transparency works on both.

There's a filesystem service and registry service that will persist changes into localStorage, and the paint app (and eventually text editor) can save files to your real filesystem.

I'm trying to think of any other apps I should add before release. I'm going to write a 3D endless runner game for it this weekend.

It’s been a long road. I started falling into a depression with my second open heart surgery in 2013. The years following there were family issues with my autistic son, undesirable job reassignments, and a month long outpatient stay at a mental health hospital, the election of Trump, and the split from my wife.
I’m happy to say that recently, a week or more, I finally feel like myself again. Its been like 5 years but my brain is finally working like it should. I’m probably jinxing it by bringing it up but I felt it was important to share this since I’ve shared all those other things. Live isn’t always and forever negative.

I love when the universe works out in my favor. I had an absolutely gorgeous coworker at my last job who was always super flirty, but I was in a relationship when I was working there so nothing ever came of it.

I hadn't thought about her in over a year and then went to grab a beer after work, and it turns out she is working at the liquor store right next to my apartment and still remembers me, seeing as how she ran out from behind the counter to give me a huge hug when she saw me.

Grabbed her number and we now have a date set up for when I get back in town after the first of the year. Feels good, man!
