So early this year, I got tired of my friend’s girlfriend asking me to make her a drink while we’re playing poker. She didn’t ask annoyingly so but anytime she thought I was free she’d ask for something when I got a chance. I went to Mexico a few years ago and in each of the rooms they had a liquor cabinet with upside down bottles that you could pour your own drinks and they’d refill all the bottles daily. The cabinets were pretty and I’ve always wanted to make one. However, you still have to make your own drink.

Instead of my previous dream I decided to go ahead and make a drink mixer that would actually mix drinks together for you. Hence, my machine was born. Let me roll though my design decisions:

I found 4 different pump types that were small enough to work in a cabinet and be capable of mixing drinks:
1. A Syrup pump is great because it allows for a closed (no air) system and pumps fast; therefore making your drinks mix quickly; however buying 8 was just too expensive ($35 or so each). They were also a bit on the large size
2. Air pumps seem the most common, medium speed, inexpensive ($2-20), but they introduce air into the system that I do not like.
3. The 3rd pump is used in espresso machines and party foggers. These actually seemed like they would be the best, but I could never source them.. They’re like $2/ea if you order 1000 from China.
4. And finally the 4th isn’t a pump at all. Instead what I went with was a low pressure solenoid. This allowed be instead to gravity feed. It’s slow, but slow is great for layering drinks. They’re cheap, they don’t add air to the system, and easy to get. They use very little power. Think I paid around $12/ea for these.

Since I wanted a closed system, I needed something that would shrink with use so I needed a bag to hold the liquid. The perfect solution for this is tube feeding bags. I found a cheap case on ebay for 1L bags. They also have ice pockets so you can chill the bag with an ice pack. They also come with their own tubing that works perfectly with the solenoid barbs. All I have to do is cut the dripper part and it fits directly on both sides of the solenoid without a clamp being required.

To control all the solenoids I ordered an 8 relay USB controller card. I ordered 1 from Bulgaria but it never came so I bought a solder yourself kit. It never came so I ordered another solder yourself kit. The last one came and worked fine. Later I got 2 from Bulgaria (months later after I complained they send another one and then they both arrived about 10 days apart). I also got the other kit in; so now I have 3 extra boards.

I purchased a MSI Wind Top All In One PC to control this thing. I wanted the touch screen and I got a great deal on this puppy from NewEgg as an open box. It was like $100 more than the next cheapest atom all in one and it’s actually more powerful than my gaming PC. So it allows for MP3 and bluray playback (with surround of course), web browsing, and the control to my drink machine. We even had fun one night searching for dicks on chat roulette (lol, what else is that good for?).

My miter saw broke and I was in a hurry to put a cabinet together so I looked around and ended up buying 2 bathroom cabinets from Walmart for $10 each. I put them top to top so I’d have the height for the bags and the solenoid compartment. It’s not perfect but it was cheap and easy. At this point I waited so long for the relay boards that I wanted it finished.

BC2 POST OF DOOM

Alright ladies and gents. We now have an automatic authentication system available for use with a web interface. Here's how it works.

1. Go here: http://stoldark.com/Shack/BC2Authenticator

2. Click register and enter your Shackname. this will send you a ShackMessage with your generated password. You can change this if you don't like it. In fact, you probably should.

3. Start freeing up those slots.

It's that simple. I can extend it to any arbitrary number of servers, so any admins out there that want in Shackmessage me. Finally, some ground rules: you will be limited to one "slot request" per 20 minutes, so you can't spam the shit out of this thing. If no one is kicked, don't worry, it doesn't count against a usage so you can try the next server. Each request will actually (attempt) to kick X players from the server (X/2 per team) if possible, and that parameter is customizable by server. Right now it's set to 2 as a default for all available servers. Asshats and abusers will be deauthorized so don't be jerks. You must have at least 100 posts to register. This is checked against automatically.

This system works beautifully with the in-game Steam Overlay Browser so all of you Steam users will have quick and easy access. Be sure to turn on those overlays!

Alright get cracking people because even if you've got that shack tag on, if you're not authenticated in this system, you may be a kicked when another authenticated user requests a slot.

To be transparent, I use the shack as a barometer on how American culture is evolving and this is entirely in line with how most Americans approach politics right now: walking away from it. I’m not surprised by this move but it sure is disappointing.

People take this place way too seriously.

PRO TIP: Turning off political posts makes this place a lot more tolerable. Feel free to do what you want to do, but it makes my life better just staying out of them.
