Report: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Game in the Works

BioWare Austin supposedly is now working only on Star Wars properties.

Another one from the rumor mill, but given the track record of the source, this one could be worth watching. Apparently BioWare Austin is working on a remake or reimagining of its classic RPG Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

The rumor comes from Liam Robertson (aka Unseen64), who has a credible record of early reveals of Middle-earth: Shadow of War and the cancellation of Scalebound. In his podcast, available on his Patreon page, he said that BioWare Austin has been relegated to a one-franchise studio.

"I've learned now that they are pretty much now exclusively working on Star Wars games and they're going to be doing that for the indefinite future. What they're currently working on right now - and I have this on good authority - is a sort of remake/revival of Knights of the Old Republic," he said. "I don't know when this is set to come out, but it has been in development for a little while now. I don't really know how that game will end up. I've heard that it isn't exactly a remake anymore, but it started as a remake/revival. Now it's kind of going from that blueprint in sort of its own original thing. I guess we'll see what that turns out to be, but they are prototyping it right now."

If the rumor is true, it would be great news for KOTOR fans, given that all they have had to keep them going was a rather solid mobile port of the game and a fan remake using Unreal Engine 4 that hasn't officially been released yet.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic came out in 2003. A sequel, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - The Sith Lords from Obsidian Entertainment, came out in 2004. Since then the franchise as an RPG has been dormant, although BioWare Austin's Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO is set 300 years after the events of the other games.

With how popular remasters are these days, the rumor is definitely not out of the realm of possibility. A remake, or even a modified remaster with some additional content, would fit in nicely with assets the studio has already developed for the MMO, but this should be taken with the proverbial cocked brow until EA or BioWare deem fit for say something.

It's been so long since Bioware has made a game that has scratched my itch for RPG's that I don't have the hype for this that I wish I did.

Whoever the current writers should, the rest can stay, they do great work.

umm who are the "rest"? an RPG company aint shit without good writers and designers. Bioware has spent pretty much all their goodwill points from their past laurels. They will really need to step up their game if they are to save their brand.

The writing may be subpar, but using Frostbite helps a ton, and the combat in their recent games is pretty damn good. I'd take the quality of ME:A's gunplay and combine it with the writing of old any day.

The last time we heard this news we got the MMO. Then the MMO expansions. I think I'll keep the hype very low until more than a rumor pops up.

If this were 2011, I would be out of my mind excited. But the intervening years has given us SWTOR, DA:I, ME3 and ME:A.

Whoa what, I think they could get away with a HD remake, been long enough to get nostalgia sales and new kids who don't know about those games. They would have to update the gameplay though, some kind of third person action like ME probably
