Report: StarCraft Remastered May Be Coming This Summer
Blizzard is tight-lipped about everything, so we probably won't know anything until we get an announcement.
The rumor of a remastered version of StarCraft has been floating around for some time, with the latest news being that we would see it in September of last year. That was obviously wrong, so a new report of a better looking version of the popular RTS should be taken with a grain of salt. But those rumors are starting anew regardless.
Sports Seoul (via Google Translate by way of PC Gamer) says that the remaster is now coming this May or June, with an announcement possibly as early as next week. The translation is a bit sketchy, but compatability with the modern version of Battle.net could be one of the main additions to the game, aside from better graphics. Supposedly, "key stakeholders" have already seen the game at BlizzCon last year, including eSports broadcasters and sponsors.
ESports in Korea is very popular, with StarCraft 2 a big part of the scene, so that may give the site a little credibility when it comes to inside information. But considering how tightly Blizzard holds its information, this should probably be treated with a cocked eyebrow and a healthy dose of "We'll believe it when we see it."
StarCraft was originally released in 1998, and is considered by many fans as the best RTS game ever. It helped launch the genre into the mainstream, along with games like Total Annihilation and Command & Conquer.
StarCraft 2 just wrapped up its Nova: Covert Missions packs in December, effectively bringing the series to a close. Blizzard still plans tournaments and eSports support for the franchise, but with a StarCraft 3 potentially far off in the distance, an HD Remaster may be the only thing to hold the interest of fans who aren't into the competitive scene.

I wonder if this is related to D2/WC3 being fixed for macOS on Intel last year. D2 and WC3 had run on OS X but only on PowerPC, so the thing released last year was Blizzard doing the work to make it work on Intel. But StarCraft 1 was from the MacOS 9 and before era so it would be non-trivial, so making it run on macOS would require a bit of work.
So maybe the effort to spruce up StarCraft 1 for Windows and Mac is what we're seeing here.
I would also accept a remake in the StarCraft 2 engine. -
