Pokemon Go to Add 80 New Pokemon This Week
Chikorita, Cyndaquil and Totodile are among the new additions.
It has been a long time coming, but Pokemon Go is finally pushing through an update this week that adds 80 new Pokemon to the roster, as well as new goodies to make them easier to catch and evolve. New trainer outfits and accessories are also part of the patch.
The little critters are being pulled from Pokemon Gold and Silver's Johto region, and while we don't have a complete list, we know that Chikorita, Cyndaquil and Totodile are included. In addition, two new berries are being added: the Nanab Berry to keep the Pokemon from zipping around so much, and the Pinap Berry to double the amount of candy obtained on a successful capture. The Nanab is designed for the new mechanics being added, as Pokemon will react differently as you try to catch them. The UI has been changed so that the berries and different Pokeballs can be selected on the encounter screen itself.
For those players that like a different look for their trainers, Niantic is also adding some customization options for new shirts and hats for your avatar.
“Today is a momentous occasion for our team here at Niantic which has been hard at work to deliver these additional Pokémon and build upon the encounter and capture mechanics for our passionate global community of Trainers playing Pokémon Go,” Niantic founder and CEO John Hanke said in a statement. “Pokémon Go is a live experience which we’ll be continuing to support and evolve in new and interesting ways for years to come with new gameplay features, in-game and live events, more Pokémon to discover and much more.”
Pokemon Go added a few Gen 2 Pokemon in December as a tease, but this will be the first update to make such a significant addition to the roster. The official release date has not been announced except for this week, so start watching for it over the next few days.
