Super Nintendo World is Coming to Universal Studios Japan
Move over Disneyland; there's a new 'happiest place on Earth.'
Universal Studios Japan has announced that a Nintendo-themed expansion is coming to their park in time for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. "Super Nintendo World" will feature characters and game worlds from Nintendo's games. The expansion will include expansive and multilevel environments filled with "state-of-the-art rides."
Development of Super Nintendo World is expected to exceed 50 billion yen, (around $433 million USD). There will also be Nintendo-themed interactive areas, shops, and restaurants to compliment the rides. The Super Nintendo World expansion is projected to create 11.7 trillion yen in revenue and create 1.1 million jobs in Japan over a ten year period.
Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo and Mark Woodbury of Universal Creative have worked hand-in-hand in designing Super Nintendo World. Although the Universal Studios Japan version of the Nintendo-themed expansion will be the first to open there are already plans to open similar expansions at Universal Studios Orlando and Universal Studios Hollywood. Since the Japanese Super Nintendo World is set to open sometime in or near 2020, expect the American versions to open sometime after that.
