Not to be outdone by Oculus's Touch controller, which went up for pre-order earlier this week, Valve debuted a new peripheral for HTC Vive at its Steam Dev Days conference.

Although Valve doesn't open Steam Dev Days to members of the press, developers attending the show took pics and posted them to social media (via Kotaku). Reports indicate that the controller on display is a prototype.

Judging by the images, one of the controller's features seems to be the ability for players to open their hands during use. Kotaku speculates that such functionality might help Vive developers recreate hand movements more accurately, since so many VR games depict controllers as human hands in-game.

It's too early to suss out how much Valve's updated Vive controller will cost or when it will be made available. The original controller costs $130, which seems a logical and safe guess.
