Fallout 4 and Skyrim Special Edition PS4 mod support not going to happen after all
Bethesda says Sony won't approve it, so it is now a dead issue ... until further notice.
Fallout 4 fans who play on PS4 have been eagerly awaiting mod support for the games, something Bethesda has already released on PC and Xbox One. The upcoming Skyrim Special Edition was also supposed to add the feature. The holdup has been negotiatons with Sony on the issue. Now, it looks like the delay has become a roadblock and mods will not be coming.
In a short but pointed post on the official site, Bethesda made it clear that Sony was at fault. "After months of discussion with Sony, we regret to say that while we have long been ready to offer mod support on PlayStation 4, Sony has informed us they will not approve user mods the way they should work: where users can do anything they want for either Fallout 4 or Skyrim Special Edition."
The company makes it clear that there is nothing they can do unless Sony changes its mind. "Like you, we are disappointed by Sony’s decision given the considerable time and effort we have put into this project, and the amount of time our fans have waited for mod support to arrive. We consider this an important initiative and we hope to find other ways user mods can be available for our PlayStation audience. However, until Sony will allow us to offer proper mod support for PS4, that content for Fallout 4 and Skyrim on PlayStation 4 will not be available."
VP Pete Hines had said previously that the process was still "undergoing an evaluation," but made it clear that the evaluation was not on their end. "It's definitely not that we've decided not to do it. We absolutely, positively want to get PS4 mods out as fast as humanely possible."
Without specifically saying it, Bethesda's finger-pointing may be hoping to initiate some fan pressure on Sony to give in. We'll update if Sony pushes back with their reasoning.
