EVE Online will be completely free starting this November, although current customers will be given access to more content.

CCP has announced EVE Online will be free starting in November.

The studio will be adding a Clone States feature that will do away with trial accounts and will allow all players, past, present, or future, the ability to play EVE Online for free.

The expansion coming in November will divide characters into two clone states. Omega clones will proceed to interact with the game as current active EVE characters, allowing them unlimited access to skill progression and rapid skill training. Alpha clones will become the new standard for all characters as they’ll be able to train and use specific skills to fly some of the most often-used ships in the game, which includes Tech 1 frigates, destroyers, and cruisers. Alpha pilots will also be able to access trading, industry, and exploration skills

The upcoming expansion will also include additional sandbox gameplay features, including the new Industrial Arrays, which is a new class of player-built structures that further the progress of Citadel structures that were first introduced in April. Additional planned features include a new ship, tactical adjustments to warfare links, changes to the Rorqual industrial capital ship, and more.

TLDR: If you pay you get all the skills. if you lapse or don't pay you can only use a very basic skill set. If you lapse and then pay again, you get all your skills back.

does this apply to only training skills or also using skills? if you don't pay, do your character's current skill levels change?

          Two characters basically.

that's a quote from the article, which I did read, and it's vague enough that it doesn't satisfactorily answer my question

Q: If I used to play EVE, do I need to do anything to activate Alpha State?

A: No, any unsubscribed account will automatically be set to Alpha State.

Q: What happens if I log in as an Alpha but I’m in a ship with required Omega skills?

A: You will be allowed to fly the ship until the next time you dock, but any ship bonuses or attributes will not gain the benefits of Omega skills.

Q: What happens if I log as an Alpha but I have modules fit that require Omega skills?

A: Those modules will be set offline when you log in.

Q: What happens if my training queue contains Omega skills but I am in Alpha State?

A: We will pause your training queue and it will need to be manually restarted once the Omega skills are removed or the subscription is renewed.

thanks. so this change is meaningless for anyone who has played the game for any length of time.

So basically, I should resub in October for the game that I had played 2 years ago, in order to get one of the Omega accounts?

      Is that how that works?

Sounds like you keep getting what you always had as a sub, but they're adding a new FTP tier of character that has fewer options and abilities.

My understanding is your account is only Omega while you are paying. Once you stop or unsubscribe you go to the free level

so now its pay to win?

Well it has always been sort of pay to win considering you can get in game money using isk. Maybe pay to win isn't the best term - maybe pay to get ahead faster?

Really just an expansion of trial accounts beyond 30 days and adding a way for full accounts to get downgraded if people want to continue playing for free.

This sounds like the best in-game explanation of F2P ever. Has any other game even bothered making canon explanations for the differences before?
