Detective Pikachu, Legendary Pictures chooses you! The Burbank, California-based company has acquired the film rights to create a live-action adaptation of the forthcoming adventure game for 3DS.

In a report published by The Hollywood Reporter (via IGN), production will begin in 2017. Toho will distribute the film in Japan, and Universal Pictures will bring it to theaters elsewhere. Plot and character details are being closely guarded.

Negotiations to lock down film rights kicked into overdrive following the overnight success (to put it lightly) of Pokémon Go.

Detective Pikachu is available in Japan, and stars a Pikachu with a vocabulary consisting of more than his name.
