Tencent completes deal to buy Clash of Clans mobile company Supercell
Final value is estimated at $8.6 billion (insert Dr. Evil image here).
The deal has been in the works for some time, but now all the paper work is apparently complete. Chinese holding company Tencent will be purchasing an 84% stake in Finnish mobile game developer Supercell.
Tencent will drop about $8.6 billion in the purchase and pursue the buyout in stages that will culminate some time in the thrird quarter of this year, according to the Wall Street Journal. The deal ends up putting an overall pricetag of more than $10 billion on the Clash of Clans developer. To put that in a bit of perspective, the company was found in 2010 by six developers, and has released only four games - Hay Day, Clash of Clans, Boom Beach and Clash Royale. However, all four were listed in the top 20 revenue games for iOS in May.
The move by Tencent continues to solidify its gaming portfolio. In December, it completed the purchase of League of Legends developer Riot Games. It also owns stakes in Epic Games, Glu Mobile, and Activision/Blizzard.
