PlanetSide, Legends of Norrath going offline this summer

Two of Sony Online's first and biggest hits are being phased out so development teams can focus on newer products.

After maintaining servers for almost 20 years across the two games, Daybreak Entertainment will pull the plug on the original Planetside and Legends of Norrath.

According to PC Gamer (via GameSpot), servers for MMOFPS PlanetSide will go offline on July 1, next Friday, at 4pm Pacific / 7pm Eastern.

Daybreak—formerly Sony Online Entertainment—broke the news in a forum post. "PlanetSide 1 has a very important history with Daybreak Games and a special place in the hearts of those who work on its successor. While we have run the game for free since 2014, due to evolving business needs and technical requirements it has become necessary to conclude this service."

Legends of Norrath, a standalone CCG set in the EverQuest universe, will last a while longer, until August 17 at 12pm Pacific / 3pm Eastern. "Legends of Norrath has not had an active development team for quite some time and in the best interest of our company and players, we have made the difficult decision to close the servers," Daybreak developers wrote in a separate post.

To circumvent customer support issues, Daybreak will cease the sale of booster packs beginning July 18. Players who have packs to open will need to do so before servers go offline in order for the rewards to carry over to EverQuest and EverQuest II.

"We know some of you are extremely enthusiastic about some of the items that were previously introduced in the Legends of Norrath TCG packs. These loot rewards will continue to be available to players through other means. Look to the Marketplace for packs which give an opportunity for rewards from previous LON sets. We appreciate your understanding and continued support."

I've actually just got back into Planetside 2 and I'm having a lot of fun with it. It's a good change of pace when you are bored with everything else.

Thats too bad about Legends of Norrath. It was a great digital ccg and had some awesome single player and coop hooks.

Actually one thing I realized about Norrath is the card packs cost real money. Thats huge. I knew people who spent hundreds of dollars.

Oue digital future is scary :(

Planetside 1 was fun. I wish they'd release some sort of private server stuff.
