E3 2016: Nintendo working on a 'new kind of Mario'
When Miyamoto-san talks, people listen.
Nintendo has impressed everyone with its Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild reveal this year, but with the new NX console coming in March 2017, you can bet that the company is not sitting back on its laurels. Which brings to mind a certain Italian plumber.
"We're always challenging ourselves to create something new, so hopefully you'll see a new kind of Mario in about a year or two," company visionary Shigeru Miyamoto told IGN. "Maybe next E3 we'll be able to share something."
Of course, by that time the NX will be out, along with a host of other games that are presumably being developed for simultaneous launch, like Zelda. But why wouldn't Mario be a launch title as well? Miyamoto suggested that the challenges are different for the Mario franchise. "It's kind of difficult with Mario because some of the more important conventions of Mario are based on the approachability and accessibility of those games," he said. He explained that staff additions and changes in the development team have allowed the company to look "at the conventions with fresh eyes."
In the meantime, if you want Mario, you'll have to be content with a new Mario Party on 3DS and some new amiibos.

I was just thinking about this the other day, what if there was a Grand Theft: Mushroom Kingdom. Game controls like Mario 64/Sunshine/Galaxy on foot, Mario kart while in a car, etc. I'd play that. Now that I think about it, that's kinda what Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts was going for and that game was pretty good.
