Final Fantasy 9 coming to PC, iOS, and Android in 2016

One of our favorite Final Fantasy games is finally getting a re-release and will be released on PC and mobile.

Square Enix has announced Final Fantasy 9 will be re-released on PC and mobile devices this year, specifically iOS and Android devices.

Final Fantasy 9 will feature updated graphics as well as new game features, such as auto-save and the inclusion of a high-speed mode.

A trailer for Final Fantasy was published just before the new year, which shows off much of the game’s cinematics, although we spotted some in-game footage that shows off some of the graphical enhancements. The battle sequences also look to have been improved from the original game.

Final Fantasy 9 is currently expected to be released in Japan, but we wouldn’t be surprised if the re-release made its way to Western markets.

I just grabbed XIII off the steam sale. Been happy with the port so far. Hopefully this means they've finally gotten the kinks out on porting to other platforms.

The lightning returns port is fantastic - dare I say they may have figured it out.

I heard that, which is why I went and grabbed them. But, since Lightning Returns wasn't on sale I figured I'd wait while I play through the first 2. Maybe it'll come up on the spring sale.

i picked up xiii as well, and it definitely plays nice, but im finding it super linear so far, maybe im just not far into it though

XII is almost completely linear. FFXIII-2 was a lot better than it in that regard. Lightning returns is the least linear at all, but does have a difficult time constraint built in to it.

9 was the last FF game I finished. I've given up on the series since then.

why? 10 and 12 were both polarizing for sure, but were both worlds better than 9.

I don't agree with that. I think 9 was better than both, but for different reasons. 10 and 12 both had unbearable characters that drove me crazy.

9 was a grindfest though, the gameplay was slow and tedious. 10 and 12 had piss poor characters, but in many ways that was the only thing bad going for them.

I don't really understand the point of JRPGs without characters or a story you care about. The games never had the strongest gameplay elements. Granted 10 and 12 had better systems, but it all felt kind of empty and meaningless.

I thought the story of 10 was fantastic. I hated Tidus's voice and his writing was the weakest (which for the main character is really, really bad). Still, the story in 10, the reveal about who exactly Tidus was, what a summoner has to do, and the ramifications of both, regardless of his shitty dialog really carried the game. Not to mention Auron is by far and away the most badass FF character of all time. It was as "fantasy" as a fantasy game could get.

12 I only played through 2 times and I do hope to see it given the HD treatment after 9 so I can play it again. What I remember of 12 was that Vaan was a horribly written character and the story focuses a lot on him, but it is largely an ensamble cast and bosche and the other dude were really great characters. The reason I don't like 12 as much as 10 and 13-2, is that the entire thing seemed to be based around politics. It didn't seem so epic because you were really just dealing with corrupt politicians - if I recall correct, which I may not.

I agree about 10's reveal, etc, but the voice acting and main character drove me crazy enough that I can't rate it more highly than 9.

In 12, Vaan and his girl friend were completely superfluous. They were obviously inserted in to the story in order to give younger audiences somebody to relate to, but they were totally unnecessary. The main character was actually Balthier, the pirate, but the game was so bogged down by this androgynous goof ball who was inserted in to every scene, I also couldn't rate it more highly.

I fucking loved the areas in 12, though. I'd definitely play through it again with an HD remaster.

Fair enough, I can't defend the voice actor for tidus, who clearly got his inspiration for the part from the 1980s link in the super mario brother's tv show.

Yeah 12 was an absolutely beautiful game.

I'm excited to play 9 again, especially with "turbo speed". Can't wait to see what this means.

Main problem is he ends up having something stupid to say in damn near every cut scene. He should never have been in the game. ;(

I'm going to have to find some youtube videos about 10. I honestly can't remember if I finished it or not. I know I played it all the way to the end, but something tells me I may not have actually finished the story. I remember playing it with my wife. It was drop-dead gorgeous for the time. I'd love to play an HD version just to see it again and finish the story. I don't remember the full reveal; which is why I think I may not have finished it. Can't think of why we would have stopped though.

As soon as voice acting hit I was out. FFX is more or less tolerable until the end where you kept fighting the same dude over and over. FF12 the main characters were annoying and 13 was just not fun.

Was 9 the one that has the summons... something of 13 something? it literally took like 3 minutes to play the whole animation, especially if you had the mimic ability.

I can't speak to that but I don't recall them being worse in the original FF7 and FF8 PC versions than they were on the PS1.

Judging from the screenshots it looks like it'll be much better than a typical iOS port. 3D elements are given a bump in resolution, and the textures are filtered a little, giving it a much cleaner look.\

Probably similar to how it would look on an emulator.

Though if Square wanted to be really awesome, they would have tried to dig up all the high-resolution masters for the pre-rendered backgrounds in the game:

It's one of my favorites and I definitely beat it. I've been playing it again recently and I don't remember it being so tough around the time you get Quina (Blue mage, cook thingy). Apparently that is a steep difficulty spike then it gets easier after that. It just feels like every fight I blow through my potions and have to run back to town.

Maybe not, but it's actually a decent guide now.

Better than the VII guide they republished, which they just copy/pasted errors and all from the original.

Yeah, the new one Prima published is terrible. The formatting is better, but it still has all of the errors including the Final Materia requirements being wrong and they even misprinted an entire character bio.
