Minecraft: Wii U Edition coming next week with GamePad support
Minecraft on the Wii U? We can't imagine a more perfect holiday gift for younger players.
Mojang and Nintendo have announced Minecraft will be coming to the Nintendo Wii U on December 17.
Minecraft: Wii U Edition will feature multiple add-on content packs, such as both Battle & Beasts Skin Packs, Natural Texture Pack, City Texture Pack, Fantasy Texture Pack, and Festive Mash-Up Pack. Both companies are also working on collaborating new content for Nintendo fans to enjoy in the future.
The game will support off-TV play, which will allow players to enjoy Minecraft on their GamePad controller. Considering how hooked younger players can get to Minecraft, this was a very smart decision so others can use the TV while the game is being played.
In addition to the included packs, a total of sixteen add-on packs will also be available for purchase within the Nintendo eShop. The additional packs are:
- Festive Skin Pack
- The Simpsons Skin Pack
- Doctor Who Skins Volume 1
- Doctor Who Skins Volume 2
- Star Wars Classic Skin Pack
- Star Wars Rebels Skin Pack
- Star Wars Prequel Skin Pack
- Mass Effect Mash-up Pack
- Skyrim Mash-up Pack
- Plastic Texture Pack
- Candy Texture Pack
- Cartoon Texture Pack
- Steampunk Texture Pack
- Pattern Texture Pack
- Greek Mythology Mash-up Pack
- Halloween 2015 Mash-up Pack
Minecraft: Wii U Edition will be available on the Nintendo Wii U on December 17 for $29.99.

I mentioned this to my boss and there's one potential HUGE use case for this: people who's kids play Minecraft now on the Xbox or something and would like to have their TV back. Like if you're a parent who wants to keep the consoles in the living room to monitor usage but you'd like to watch a show from time to time. Little Timmy can just put it on the GamePad screen and keep going.
If they market this right this might be a better system seller than Mario Kart. Ok maybe not that big but this was probably worth whatever money Nintendo threw at Microsoft/Mojang to make it happen.-
This is exactly what I was thinking. My 20-month likes to play Yoshi's Wooly World because she loves Yoshi. Having her being able to enjoy the game on the GamePad while I watch something on TV is a huge benefit to owning a Wii U. The same thing goes for Minecraft for those parents whose kids are addicted to the game.
