Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 will add PC modding in 2016

Treyarch has long been considered among the more PC-friendly of the Call of Duty developers and it is looking to cement that reputation with the addition of PC modding tools for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 early next year.

Call of Duty: Black Ops III is set to release this week, but today, Activision and Treyarch are announcing a major new feature for the PC version of the game that won't quite be ready for launch. Treyarch has been known as the more PC-friendly among the CoD development teams and it is looking to prove that by announcing another first for the series: the addition of PC mods.

PC users will soon be able to create their own maps, as well as their own game modes, from scratch. Black Ops III will get unraked dedicated servers solely dedicated to these custom creations. Server hosts will also find tools to assist them in throwing up their own servers. These servers will then be thrown into an Unranked Server Browser for convenience. More information can be found on the Treyarch website.

This is something of an ambitious move for a Call of Duty game, which is why the feature won't be ready for launch. Treyarch is anticipating a March deployment date for closed alpha, with an open beta set to come quickly after. The developer is pledging to keep PC users updated on its progress. Regardless of when it starts, it appears that Treyarch is looking to make Black Ops III last well beyond whatever next year's Call of Duty game winds up being.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

Purely for custom servers. Yep, this announcement will make tens of people happy.

Huh? You would want mods on non-custom servers? I am so confused.

It is less that you can't mod ranked servers and more than the mods are part of the tiny and meaningless subset that is unranked servers.

The days of modding fps shooters is done. If you aren't on the server list or in the matchmaking with the majority of players, it doesn't really matter much anymore, you won't be seeing many players beyond those in your own community.

There's nothing stopping them from putting out a community map matchmaking playlist when the tools have been out there for a while, or even putting the best of the best into regular rotation for everyone.

At the very least it will give the game some legs to those who don't care about leveling or unlocking more stuff after hundreds of hours and just want to play some new stuff in the same game.

Perhaps. There will of course be two more CODs by then, but I guess the ship has sailed on the community constantly chasing the newest in the series with the radically differing levels of quality in the series now?
