Dark Souls creator Hidetaka Miyazaki has revealed Dark Souls 3 will be the “turning point” for the franchise and will pave the way for something new.

According to an interview with GameSpot, Miyazaki says he wants to work on something new as he intends to launch “several new projects,” although he didn’t go into specifics as to what these projects would be. "Dark Souls is my life’s work," he shares. "Everything I came up with for Dark Souls 3 is based on my personal preferences.”

When asked if he would explore sci-fi or mech genres, Miyazaki said he “definitely wants to bring the Miyazaki Touch” to these genres.

While the Medieval and Victorian Eras have served as great settings for the Dark Souls series and Bloodborne, a sci-fi setting is something we can’t help but get excited by its prospect. We can already imagine having to fight large alien bosses that look extremely intimidating and horrifying.

Dark Souls 3 is expected to release in spring 2016 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.

Good. I'm honestly a bit disappointed they're making a Dark Souls 3. They've over saturated it for me at this point, at least in that type of setting. Make something new!

It didn't need sequels but I think what really sours me on the idea is that Dark Souls 2 is a poor sequel. If they bring back the magic with DK3 then yay, but I'd rather see new ideas like Bloodborne.

Every game is going to seem like Souls unless they pick a totally different kind of game category. Look at all the pushback against Bloodborne for not being Soulsy enough.

It's a dilemma when you've created a beloved franchise that's such a perfect hybrid of so many genres. Can't go back to a story heavy single player game, light on gameplay mechanics, can't merely set your franchise in a different world, can't just retread old franchises that didn't have everything Souls has. Can't just take every new gameplay idea and put it in a Souls wrapper, rather than creating new IP either.

I am fine with keeping the core mechanics etc, just give me a new setting. I never personally found the world of Dark Souls to be that engaging, especially after coming from Demon's Souls. Like the article mentioned, give me a cool scifi themed take on the Souls formula or something! But I am tired of the Dark Souls universe.

I will continue to say that the moment to moment fighting mechanics and build/infusing/buff/moveset options are far better in DS2.

For me it's Demons for scariest and craziest, DS1 for best co-op, DS2 for best PvP and BB for biggest thrill ride.

I liked the world tendencies of Demons, the NPCs of DS1, the build variety of DS2 and the super tight fight mechanics and extended enemy AI of BB.

I've got good memories from all of them and am ready, willing and able for more Souls, more BB and new stuff that has nothing to do with either of them. And more Otogi, because it's still my favorite From experience of them all. :D

Myth of Demons is still one of the most perfect examples of video game art for art's sake. Pure synesthesia.

I still keep an Xbox permanently hooked up for both of them. No one knows how to do that combination of vast silence and all-out action like From, those Zen motherfuckers.

I think people mostly agree that the mechanics are more polished in DS2, it's just the whole experience through the world/game isn't as special as it was with DS1.

One thing that helped me in DS2 was the mood just wasn't as scary. DS1 and especially Demons were so creepy, on top of worrying about getting invaded, it was hard to progress.

DS2 I was so much less tense, so I played more effectively and didn't give a shit about fighting invaders, which turned into the real fun.

Am I missing something? The only way I see Dark Souls 3 "paving the way" for new, different projects is if it makes a boatload of money by being really successful.

Might be a translation issue, but I'm guessing he means that Dark Souls 3 will finish out the franchise. Of course, that isn't really his decision.

It'll be cross platform, so there's little doubt it'll pull in the sales to fund the risk of a new IP or two.
