E3 2015: Shenmue 3 Kickstarter Campaign Begins

It's a night of surprises at the Sony E3 2015 press conference. One of the biggest being the launch of the Shenmue 3 Kickstarter campaign.

Live from the Sony E3 2015 Press Conference, Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki launched the much anticpated Kickstarter campaign to fund development for Shenmue 3. This could be the chance for the epic story to finally reach its conclusion.

Those that want to contribute can visit the official Kickstarter page.

I wonder if Sony gave them any notice they were going to destroy their service.

It's ticking up by thousands constantly, already at $480k. At this rate it'll be funded by midnight.

I bet it'd be half again higher if the site was able to keep up. Took several tries to get a pledge through.

still not a fan of using Kickstarter as a partial funding mechanism, there's no way $2 million is enough for what people want Shenmue 3 to be, I assume Sony or someone else is backing it significantly more

Yeah I saw the 2mil goal and was very confused.

Of course but its probably justified in this case. No one can prove interest in this IP any other way. They think its hot but they aren't sure. Well now they know.

if there's literally $1-2 million of fan money just waiting to be spent at a moment's notice and your market research department can't figure that out then you're fucked and that department should be fired. It's just an easy cash grab for the people who want to spend even more than $50 on Shenmue before anything is even finalized.

yeah, that's what's kinda gross about it, the original idea was cool when you were funding ideas/people who actually needed it

Yeah. I'm not a huge fan of that either and it seems like it gives people the wrong impression of how much it actually costs to make a game. Although even though it's another sequel, at least it's still more interesting and riskier than a Castlevania clone. I kind of get why they would want to do a kickstarter to measure demand for this.

It is a pre-order campaign. They use it to quantify the market.

yes, under the guise of funding so they can capture the people willing to preorder for $1000

I was in shock when they announced this. My God the day has finally come 14 years later. This will be funded by tomorrow

It is without a doubt the best sailor locating simulation ever.

It was going for a cinematic experience at a time when few games could pull that off. Things like shifting camera angles and QTE prompts were all pretty new. It was pseudo open world with branching side stories affected by decisions you made. It was basically the promise of you "do what you want with your day." Whether that meant going to the arcade and wasting all your money there or getting a part time job as a forklift operator; it was your decision with consequences. All this at a graphic fidelity that was incredibly impressive at the time.

Games like GTA and Sleeping Dogs have gone on to do it better but Shenmue was the first to show the potential in that type of game.

The hype is also borne out of the fact it was always billed as a trilogy (cliche revenge story) and each part released ended in a cliff hanger. So part of the clamor is to see how the story ends.

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised. I remember an old 360 rumor that part 3 would be released with 1 and 2 on the disc. People will need to get caught up with the story. Part 2 was confusing as shit because so many character names ended up being aliases and were supposed to be plot twists. The ending of 2 also got really supernatural. I have no idea where Suzuki is going with it.

The first one had a 70m budget and took 5 years. Let's hope they don't take that long :) I am assuming Sony is fronting some money to be ps4 console exclusive. 2m isn't enough for a Shenmue game.

It won't take that much time and money - I'm sure it'll just be one or two shorter chapters (Shenmue 2 was 3 chapters), they're using an existing engine, asset development has come a long way (not to mention outsourcing) etc. etc.

Not sure about that. Shenmue 3 will start at chapter 7 of 16. Still a lot of content.

Oh? I thought 1 was 1 chapter, and 2 was 2-4. They're skipping a couple? Remember Chapter 4 was really short though, basically just running down a nature path.

As a huge fan of Shenmue 1 & 2, I am so sad that all they've done is announced a kickstarter for a new Shenmue. This thing is still realistically half a decade away. :(
