Square Enix announced today in a press release that the 2013 reboot of Tomb Raider has become the best-selling game of the whole series. With global sales exceeding 8.5 million copies, the reboot has surpassed sales of the original game and its sequels. Although this news isn't a suprise, it is interesting considering how Square Enix initually stated that Tomb Raider suffered from disappointing sales, despite its critical acclaim. However, things started to look up when the game surpassed 6 million sales thanks to the release of the Tomb Raider Definitive Edition for the latest generation of consoles.
Darrell Gallagher, head of studio at Crystal Dynamics states:
“Tomb Raider ignited and expanded the fan base, pushing the series to a new level. The game’s incredible sales success reflects the passionate response of players.”
The sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider, is currently in development as an Xbox One exclusive for a limited time.
