Those waiting on the next big Infinity Engine-based RPG are in for some major disappointment today. Obsidian Entertainment and publisher Paradox Interactive have announced that the Kickstarter-backed Pillars of Eternity will not make its late 2014 release window. It is now set to release in early 2015, with Obsidian citing the need for additional polish.

"Since the very beginning of this project we promised our fans and ourselves that we would release this game only when we knew it would be absolutely ready for the best experience possible," said Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart on the game forums (via the Paradox Interactive website). "We're very close to that point, but not quite there yet. The feedback we have received through our playtest process has been invaluable to us. We are coming into the home stretch but are pushing the release out just a bit to make sure we honor that promise we made originally. Thanks for your patience and support, it will be worth the wait."

Pillars of Eternity is hoping to hit the high points of many classic games in the genre, like Baldur's Gate and Planescape: Torment. With such a tall task ahead of them, a delay makes sense in the wake of the game's recent beta. While you wait for the game to hit its new 2015 release date, you can check out our E3 preview to see just how Obsidian hopes to capture the D&D-style magic with its next game.

Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?
