Destiny becomes most pre-ordered new franchise ever

Activision announced on the eve of Destiny's release it has become the most pre-ordered new video game franchise in history.

We’re certainly feeling the excitement over here at Shacknews in regards to the upcoming release of Bungie’s Destiny. Destiny’s servers are now live with pre-loading also available on Xbox and PlayStation platforms. It seems we’re not the only ones excited about Destiny as Activision has announced the title has become “the most pre-ordered new video game IP in history.”

The news comes from a press release Activision sent out earlier today announcing the game’s upcoming availability. Unfortunately, the company didn’t give any hard numbers to back this claim in their press release, instead revealing over 4.6 million people tested Destiny, becoming the “biggest beta of this console generation.”

Earlier this year, Ubisoft announced its Watch_Dogs became the most pre-ordered new IP of this year. We guess it’s safe since Destiny have become the most pre-ordered new video game IP in history, then Watch Dogs can no longer claim the title for this year.

Is the game really filled with silly banter like I'm hearing in the YouTube ads that are all over lately? It's really bad...

The silly banter will be there if you pay with people who make silly banter

I'm talking about the single player clips. The floating orbit eye is Peter Dinklage I believe.

From what I saw, it was no more silly than Halo... which is kind of fun silly in a cool sci-fi kinda way.

I just watched a shacknews twitch playthrough. It wasn't terrible or overdone. It was kind of like Bit in the Tron movie, but definitely not over done.

I just don't get the hype. I played the beta and found it incredibly boring. This game just doesn't have any personality. Generic Space FPS!

that's part of the mass-market appeal, I think.

indeed. it seems they are successfully increasing their audience by avoiding a niche identity.

I agree. That is why I'm waiting to see how it really plays out or if it is more or less the same crap from beta.. because the beta was bad.

but destiny so far seems like super long form questy/looty/levelly stuff. borderlands is immediate gratification.

So it's "Spacefucker 3D" from the classic Penny-Arcade strip series "The Sucking"? http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2001/06/08/the-sucking-continued

I thought it was fun as hell. I love the look and art design on the game. The combat mechanics were rock solid and fun. The character development was smooth and kept me hooked. Basically it felt like a very solid co-op shooter with top-notch art design, industry leading shooter mechanics and it's a ton of fun to play with friends. Pretty much exactly what I was hoping for. I've enjoyed every Halo game I've played... but I've also basically only played them in co-op. To me this is a continuation of that. Halo, Borderlands and this are just my sweet spot for fun with friends co-op.

Glad to see not everyone here isn't a fan of Destiny. I know a lot of games journalists that are really excited about Destiny. Considering how many games we play in a given year, that speaks volumes to me considering how jaded we can be at times.

The co-op looks cool. Dunno though.

The co-op was pretty cool, especially when other players would randomly drop in and out based on your location. It feels just like an MMO.

Because they embargoed reviews until release day, amirite?

Just kidding (not really), I preordered it too.

I know what you mean. I'm not entirely sure why Sony and Microsoft couldn't unlock the game for those in their respective time zones rather than launch at one specific time for all users.
