Destiny beta details, trailer revealed

Destiny's beta details have arisen--and you may want to sign up ASAP.

We're just about two months away from the release of Bungie's sci-fi saga Destiny. Today, Activision revealed information on the forthcoming beta, along with a new trailer that's certainly eye catching.

The beta will begin on July 17th on the PlayStation 4, and then on July 23rd for Xbox One. It'll run through July 27th, but there will be a "beta rally" on the 26th, where those who stand up "to be counted" will receive a special reward…if they manage to make it to the tower, that is.

Now, the beta will be undergoing maintenance on the 21st and 22nd, probably to prepare for the incoming Xbox audience, so you were warned. Outside of that, blast aliens to your heart's content!

Those who pre-order the game (even today, if you haven't already) will be guaranteed beta access, so you might want to jump on that sooner rather than later. Destiny releases on September 9th for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.

If you were in the alpha do you get access? This isn't 1998, I don't preorder games anymore. They won't run out of of digital product, and game companies have done nothing in the past few years to garner any kind of trust from people to give them money on a product that hasn't been reviewed.

Pre-ordering digital releases is absurd. Does it move me to the front of the download queue?

Kind of. If you preorder on ps4 then it'll download a couple days before release and then unlock when it goes live, like steam does.

Nope, you need to preorder to get a code or get one on a giveaway.

Well, they know they have nothing to offer and that's exactly why they try to rope you via preorders now. You better pay for your beta-priviledge, sucka!

And what if they decide that your characters roll over from beta to full release? Those that were in the beta will have a pretty good head start.

Don't know why people are complaining about preorders. It's not like you are paying anything extra, and in many cases, with beta access,if you don't like the game, they you can cancel it and you aren't out anything.

Seems like people are bitching for the sake of bitching here.

But you are paying extra in terms of shifting the financial risk from the publisher away towards your side at the very least.

Rather than pre-order online and pay full, preorder at GameStop for $5. If the game tanks at reviews (idk why anyone would rely solely on reviews for a decision...) then you have $5 you can take and put on another game.

If it works out to be a good game, you pay the rest and don't lose out on the pre-order goodies.

*shrug* The only time I don't buy a game from GameStop is if it's a pc release exclusive to Steam. Otherwise I can get my points and be a happy person.

I usually don't preorder games anymore either, but when alpha and beta codes, along with other goodie giveaways are involved, then what's five bucks?

I know that preordering is a gimmick with multiple purposes, but sometimes it's just worth it.This is one of those very few times.

All these not-single-player, not-traditional-multiplayer, not-really-MMO games confuse the hell out of me. Destiny is an action game but other than that I still don't understand what it is. I must be getting old and out of touch. :(

I am guessing they are keeping the genre definition fluid to avoid the negative connotations that some gamers have toward mmo and non-subscription MMOs. There are plenty of MMOs that have done story phasing probably similar to what this game will have.

It really is the blending of multiple genres. It's an open world game like planetside, has social things to do like WoW, has competitive multiplayer like halo, and offers co-op like borderlands. I can see why it's ambitious, it's basically like a few different games in one, it seems they reaaaaaaaaaally don't want to leave any one out:/
