At Nintendo's digital event, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime formally introduced Nintendo's previously announced NFC figurines. They're called "amiibo," and they'll debut with Smash Bros for Wii U this fall.

In Smash Bros, the amiibo figure will retain your data and transfer to other copies of the game, similar to Skylanders. In Smash Bros, the figure will take over for you and fight automatically, and each time you use them they will level up and gain access to new abilities.

Fils-Aime said the amiibo figures will work with a variety of other games. In a post-show event, Nintendo announced it is planned to work with Mario Kart 8, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Mario Party 10, and Yoshi's Wooly World.

Sooo...do I have to buy the figurines to use the characters in game? Are they effectively going to have a starter kit for Smash that only comes with Mario and one other character?

They did in another video. You can upgrade your character, or get new characters to come in and a assist you.

So basically it has no effect on the core game for those of us who want to just play Smash Brothers.

No, you can "level up" cpu versions of the characters and carry its stats over with the figurines to other wii u's.

This, it's only CPU versions of the figurines. Doesn't seem to affect the roster selection or abilities/stats for player controlled characters.

So where did the name come from? I'm guessing the first part "ami" as in friend?

Not going to kid myself. If I somehow come across the Princess Peach one, probably one of the first thing I'l do by instinct is to look under the skirt.
